🎤 Today's PHPS forum was on “Economic Booms, Bad Sleep? Evidence from China Using Search Data, Weather, and Shift-Share Shocks” #PublicHealth #DataScience 🗣️ Speaker: Dr Jing Guan, Lecturer in Sport Management at Loughborough University. 🔗 research profile: www.lboro.ac.uk/schools/spor...
Speaker Bio:
Dr Jing Guan is a Lecturer in Sport Management at Loughborough University. Her research applies economic theory and data analytics to improve health outcomes, reduce inequalities, and support evidence-based policy. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of International Business and Economics, including a joint PhD period at the University of Liverpool. Before joining Loughborough in 2025, she was Senior Lecturer in Economics and Vice Dean at Beijing Technology and Business University. Her research focuses on health policy evaluation, physical activity participation, health insurance, and the identification of physical inactivity risk using large-scale longitudinal and geographical data. She is also a member of the Grassroots Sport Facilities Evaluation Steering Group at DCMS and China Association of Social Security.Presentation summary:
Despite the central role of sleep in health, well-being, and productivity, evidence remains limited on how local economic conditions shape sleep. Theoretically, the sign is ambiguous: stronger local economic conditions may reduce sleep by raising labor demand and the opportunity cost of time, but may also improve sleep by easing financial stress and increasing material security. We study whether positive local economic shocks worsen sleep in China using two complementary data sources: a city-quarter Baidu insomnia-related search index for 2014Q1–2024Q4 and individual-level China Family Panel Studies data for 2014–2022 on sleep duration and poor sleep. In both settings, local shocks are measured with a Bartik-style shift-share index that interacts predetermined local industry employment shares with national industry growth. Stronger local exposure increases insomnia-related search, reduces self-reported sleep duration, and raises the probability of poor sleep. Detailed weather, solar, and circadian controls provide a benchmark for these effects, while auxiliary analyses of PM2.5, nighttime light, and internet use explain only a limited portion of the relationship.
