This is a great list. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet has been one of my favorite series I’ve read recently. For me, the most space opera-y space opera I’ve read is Deathstalker. I haven’t read it since high school, but it’s on my list to reread soon.

Literally the only thing missing here is to ensure that there are interesting and useful places within a short walk. Stores, restaurants, bars, transportation options, and jobs. This is the neighborhood I want to live in.

This is one of those places the State could really help. The challenge is that the electric utilities don’t have the equipment that’s needed for new buildings. The State should use its purchasing power to stockpile this equipment and provide it to housing developers at cost.

This year’s Vuelta showed just how dominant Tadej has become. The racing was reminiscent of a decade ago since his crash on Stage 8. Breakaways getting five+ minute gaps & staying away all day. GC fights only on the last mountain. This isn’t how modern racing due to Tadej’s strength & UAE’s tactics.

Now it's time to rewind the clock and make the promise of our flag a reality. California should secede from the union.

With the transit center directly in the middle, there's no reason other than car brain why this can't be a world-class destination instead of a deadbeat wasteland. Much of the parking needs to be high density use to bring it closer to how cool a ballpark should be (Padres, Cubs, etc.)

Katella and Douglass Drive already passes under the 57, and SART provides a pedestrian connection. It would be great if Douglass could be closed to cars to make way for some light rail connecting the stadium, ARTIC, and Honda Center. Maybe it could even be extended all the way down to Disneyland!

It will be great to extend the type of walkable urban development OC Vibe is currently creating all the way to Orangewood and State College. Anaheim has failed miserably in creating walkable urbanism in the Platinum Triangle, but this is an opportunity to create a true walkable core for the area.

Given Kroenke's success at Hollywood Park, with SoFi and the surrounding development, I have to imagine he's looking to do something similar in Anaheim. With the passage of the Home Run for Anaheim Act last week, the field is set to maximize the development of the stadium property.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the 'Anaheim Angels' bill into law. What it means for the team
The law does not mandate the Angels revert to the Anaheim Angels name. But it does provides the city with an incentive to dangle before the team.

This is wonderful news for the City of Anaheim. I have no doubt the high purchase price had as much to do with the potential to develop the stadium property as it was about the value of the Angels themselves. It'll provide a clean slate from all of the misdeeds of Arte Moreno & past Anaheim leaders.

From the clip, I thought he was talking about push to start buttons. What it appears he's actually talking about is when the car's engine turns off when it stops at lights and in traffic, and then turns on again when the driver hits the gas. So this is worse than getting rid of push-to-start.

It's amazing how much community you can make from a building that looks this run down. Our cities have so many more resources than they realize, if only someone comes along to activate them appropriately.

I agree we can raise taxes to pay off our debt, and we’ll need to as we get fewer foreign buyers of US debt. However, that will make Americans worse off financially. This is exactly what I mean by the harm that’ll come not being the world’s reserve currency.
000
Grant Henninger @granthenninger.com · 23/08/2026
Their tax rates are also higher than ours.
110
Grant Henninger @granthenninger.com · 23/08/2026
The only way high deficit to GDP ratios work is to: 1) grow the economy considerably, making it possible to pay down the debt without raising taxes; or 2) run a surplus by raising taxes or cutting services (or some combination of the two.) I don’t imagine us growing our way out of this debt problem.
120
Grant Henninger @granthenninger.com · 23/08/2026
The difference is who buys the debt. Being the reserve currency means foreigners are financing a large portion of our debt-financed government services. This is materially different than other high debt to GDP countries.
130
Grant Henninger @granthenninger.com · 23/08/2026
That an indefensible position. That $40 trillion we’ve racked up in debt has paid for real government services we haven’t had to pay for with higher taxes. We’re no longer going to be able to keep up this level of government spending without raising taxes. This is going to make us materially poorer.
130
Grant Henninger @granthenninger.com · 22/08/2026
Nobody has even begun to reckon with the long-term damage to the bond market that’s inevitable. The Treasury isn’t going to be able to sell new T-bills to refinance the debt, as old debt comes due. The US is going to be much poorer over the next 50-100 years for losing reserve currency status.

Ever wondered if the filament you're printing will stick to the build plate you're using? Every time someone tests this, it stays in their head. What if instead, we shared standard test results? willitstick.fyi is my attempt at community science for plate/bed adhesion. #3dprinting

California housing folks, does HCD have a consolidated list of housing element sites? Their website says they have a map, but it's really just a map of surplus sites. I want to map all of the identified housing sites from every city's housing element across a county or region.

The tallest hurdles to increased housing production aren’t within the control of cities at this point. The challenges are mostly construction cost related & the availability of capital. The state should focus on building code reform, while increasing the supply of construction material & labor.

My sense—and this is just my sense, no data to back it up—is that this is a direct result of the FDA cutting back on food inspections, leading to companies reducing hygiene because they think they can get away with it.

Decades ago, I would download races that weren’t shown in the US. Sometimes, I wasn’t able to find broadcasts in English. More than anything, watching when I couldn’t understand the commentary really forced me to pay attention and it helped me understand the racing better than I would otherwise.

It’s especially galling because we had the far superior commentary from the TNT Sports team for the first week of the race. @hannah-walker.bsky.social provides much more insightful commentary than anyone on the NBC Sports commentary team for the TdF Femmes.

Phil Liggett needs to retire from @nbc-sports.bsky.social. It was bad enough during the men’s TdF, but it’s so much worse during the TdF Femmes. He doesn’t know the name of the race or anything about the riders other than how they relate to the men’s peloton. It’s far past time he retire.

The folks complaining about cheap goods today would never have been able to afford the well made good in the past. It’s the classic American problem of people not understanding what class they’re in, and always siding with the wealthy since they think they are, or at least will be, wealthy.

A lot fewer people could afford to fly when air travel was nicer across the board. There are still plenty of ways to fly luxuriously. Folks can fly business class for 10x the cost, or first class for 20x, or even private for 500x the cost.

I picked up some new pieces of “art” over the weekend. I’ve given them backstories. These are portraits painted in the 1980s of son and grandson of the TailSpin version of Shere Khan. They might be the most ridiculous things I own now.
Photo of two painting of tigers dressed like humans. The painting on the left is a tiger wearing a red suit with blue button-down shirt and maroon tie. The painting on the left is of a tiger wearing oversized pink sunglasses, a pink leather jacket with a popped collar, and gold chains around his neck. The paintings are on the wall in a living room above a couple of mid-century modern lounge chairs and nesting side tables.

Whenever someone sends me AI-generated work, it always increases my workload at least 2x. However, the biggest problem is that they’re completely incapable of discussing their work as I try to make heads or tails of it, largely because they didn’t do the work in the first place.

This was incredibly long (blog post & thread, both), but a worthwhile read if you’re dealing with AI slop at work. Increasingly, I’m finding folks completely offloading their thinking to AI, generating documents & plans without any critical thought of their own. Universally, the work is nonsensical.

When my kids were little, I picked up an old version of Grimms’ Fairy Tales, published in the 1940’s. I don’t remember which story it was, might have been Cinderella, but it ended, “They lived happily until they died.” It was amazing how much darker it was than the Disney version.

It was a phenomenal Tour this year. So much better than the headline results would lead you to believe. That article, however, is such a terrible way to display photos. On a 16:9 screen (which seems standard these days), it's impossible to view any of the images in their entirety without scrolling.
