Couple of cold shots from Ayr last January. Expecting Arran to look that way again before much longer. It is good to live in a town beside the sea. Especially with views of the island. #photo #scotland #ayr #southAyrshire #arran #isleOfArran
View in winter from Greenan Shore. Grass and brambles in the fore. Waterbirds in the estuary. Snow-capped peaks across the seaReflective still water at the river mouth. Warfside wall and newer buildings either side of the water. Moody sky. Snowy mountains out between the buildings.

Ever read a #poem & not know why it drew you in? Did its casual tone make you the observer who wouldn't otherwise pay attention to this scene, or did the end leave you both curious & quite satisfied with "I don't know"? Simply wonderful! #ClarkPascoe #LiftToTheSky @brokenspinearts.bsky.social
Art: Book Cover, blue, brualist building. Title: High Rise Slimline, Broken Spine Arts
Poem by Clark Pascoe:
Last Will and Testament

I watched a guy from my balcony one night
sitting in his Volkswagen

there was lightning out on the horizon

and this guy
was rapidly sucking through a cigarette

not pausing to enjoy it
but yes, rapidly smoking it down

and then he suddenly took off

like it was his
Last Will and Testament

I do not know
what goes on in the mind of another man

“Perhaps he will burn down his village or
perhaps he will go on a holy pilgrimage to Jerusalem”

It's not a great leap to that, as another question for the curious. But I think I'll own it. It's not meant to be aggressive, just challenging.

I'm enjoying learning French with Duolingo but I must say, the concept of a gendered language makes no more sense to me now than when I was a child. And I don't just mean it's weird to gender objects, it is really odd to speak differently to two kinds people!

This is a question for the digital age all right. OK, so we're separating the art from the medium, now. In that case, if I EVER bought and paid full price for a hardback or vinyl record, am I now ethically able to download it, even if have lost my original copy?

a perception filter? Maybe. Ncuti Gatwa seems to take real delight in dressing up. I quite like that he makes this an aspect of the Doctor that can be played with. On the other hand, it has made it harder to feel recognition for the character. I hope he gets lots of series, so that can really grow/2

Yeah, I mean, much as I found Ruby's eagerness good fun, I got a real sense of authenticity from Belinda. The clothes thing, I guess former Doctors were either entirely eccentric or a rather generic in attire. Passing in each age, was that about charisma, or something akin to psychic paper or /1

Enjoyable, wasn't it? I hope this is the new companion, she was absolutely terrific! Love Gatwa's Doctor, just the right mix of zany and gritty. It's weird not having settled on an outfit... Do you think that was his call? Have fun with Doctor-y clothes?

Fair enough. I thought she was one of the old series' stronger points, paired with Foggy. But glad Kingpin is chief villain today. Ninjas were OK and I really liked Stick but I think they were only there to tie in with Iron Fist. And Iron Fist was naff.

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world. This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵
OBSERVED EFFECTS OF UBI

No significant reduction in labor supply (38 studies meta-analysis)

Increased self-employment (301%) and part-time employment (17%)

Slight decrease in alcohol and tobacco use (31 studies meta-analysis)

New mothers extend their maternity leaves

Birth weights improve due to better maternal nutrition

Graduation rates and educational outcomes improve

Hospitalization rates decline (8.5%)

Crime goes down (15%–42%) especially illegal hunting (95%)

Domestic violence decreases (30%–51%)

Trust increases (13% in politicians | 6% in other people)

Home ownership rates increase (17%–26%)

Food security increases as does consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables

Improved cognitive functioning (43%) and personality traits (31%)

Savings go up, debts go down

The results from Germany's big 3-year UBI experiment are out! 122 people got €1200/mo for 3 years. All were age 21-40 and employed with incomes between €1100/mo to €2600/mo They were happier, healthier, saved more, gave more, enjoyed more social time, and DID NOT WORK LESS than the control group.
