This university is really progressive - they even let drones get an education.

I had no idea that the phrase "gung ho" comes from a misunderstanding of the Mandarin phrase "工合" - wow. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gung_ho

Xitun area of Taichung is really strange. Staying in a hotel with a church next door that's bigger than the hotel. Every business is either brand-new or run down and empty or completely full. Multiple multi-floor gyms within a stone's throw. The buxibans and travel agencies look the exact same.

Guess they didn't get enough enrollees for the AI Express course - this evening every faculty member was added without any input.

Had no idea he was from Chattanooga. Also his Wiki is very random! ""Karaoke with Your Favorite Principal Dennis."[7][8] On the album, he sings everything from "Piano Man" to "Mustang Sally", the latter being a duet with Hulk Hogan's daughter Brooke Hogan."

Yeah I regret this. I think my perfect playthrough would be to take a break after each big boss and then pick a new weapon when I restart. I don't know I have the discipline to do that, though.

“This is not a dark chapter in Cornell’s history, it’s a morbid pattern” Editorial Board at The Cornell Sun absolutely fucking your shit UP www.cornellsun.com/article/2026...
We refuse for this victim to be reduced to just another story.
Cornell has failed to protect its students. Cornell has failed to address the growing issue of sexual assault on campus with its pathetic task force. Cornell has failed the student allegedly raped by those seven men at Chi Phi in October 2024. Cornell has failed her. Cornell has failed us.

To Matthew Ingalls, Jonathan Newell, Winston Lee, Gillio Lopes, Diego Sarabia, Scott Norris and Scott Kretzschmar: We know who you are and we refuse to let you benefit from this University's concealment.

Dear friends, As have become a habit, I mark each #autumnequinox by sharing a small poem by Xin Qiji. I also start my translation cycle of Chinese and Japanese poems and prose that mark the twenty-four lunisolar micro-seasons. Translation notes blogged here: #everynightapoem

Overproofed a little (taiwanese summer) so texture was a little chewier than you'd like, but the flavor was impeccable. Cinnamon buns at cafes here tend to be drier than I like. I want very gooey. These were closer to the platonic gooey ideal.

48 hours later. Cannot imagine how many resources (financial and work hours) have gone into pushing AI at this campus.
Email screenshot that says, "Dear Faculty members and students,

As generative AI continues to advance rapidly, understanding how AI works, the risks associated with its applications, and the relevant regulations have become essential to teaching, learning, and research.

The Office of Academic Affairs has invited experts and scholars from relevant fields to develop and teach the AI Express (AiX) course series. The first four modules explore AI from different perspectives, helping you develop a comprehensive understanding of AI and interdisciplinary AI literacy:"

Why can’t students use LLMs to create summaries as part of a larger project? (Have genuinely been asked this) Because figuring out how to summarize the thing is the work! And we’re supposed to teach them how to do it!

In response to the rapid development of generative AI, artificial intelligence has become an increasingly important tool in teaching and learning. To help faculty and students quickly access relevant AI information, the Office of Academic Affairs has launched the NTU AI-in-Sight platform. This resource hub integrates AI-related policies, campus activities, teaching practices, and learning resources, providing comprehensive support for exploration and application."

Red Guy: “Use me”
Yellow Guy “No”
Red Guy “USE ME”

Very different experience from me! Ever year I ask my students about traditions and the ones who go to private schools almost always say "my family doesn't do that".

observation of the week: in the US, holidays are celebrated more extravagantly by the wealthy. giant christmas trees, special holiday dresses, elaborate feasts, etc. in Taiwan, the opposite often seems true. wealthier acquaintances seem least likely to 烤肉 on 中秋節 or eat 粽子 at 端午節.

But of course, the machine conversation is not free. It comes at the cost of our common life together as teachers, learners, and researchers, colleagues, mentors, and friends. Not to mention, supervising student researchers is our job.

the griftiest part of this is that the government already has login.gov, but using that wouldn't funnel enough public money into private pockets
