Much of what Burnham is proposing has been @libdems.org.uk policy for years. A progressive alliance now and after the next election is needed to make sure it is all carried out.

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

Trump trying again to revive his claim to the Nobel Peace Prize by getting Russia to accept massive Western concessions (proposed by Putin) and the capitulation of Ukraine. Trump’smind is so twisted he doesn‘t realise that selling out Ukraine is not going to achieve his objective

Trump had people arrested to cover up his incompetence. An impeachable offense for any other president. For Trump, probably just about the 17th worst thing he did that week.

Putin's bombs are killing Ukrainian civilians, and Donald Trump is funding them by buying Russian diesel. The UK must stand up and call this what it is: another Trump betrayal of the Ukrainian people and European security.

Trump and Musk are doing everything they can to try and force Ukraine to surrender to Putin while Musk spends over $300 million to try and buy the midterm elections to maintain total power. The American government under Republicans are on the side of evil. Vote them out.

Menace to democracy Elon Musk has slowed Starlink to sabotage Ukraine and help Putin. So what country will be stupid enough to pay millions to any of Elon Musk's companies when they now know that he may unilaterally breach contracts for personal reasons on a petulant whim? Oh, I know! The US.

It will not be straightforward. The EU is such a complicated organisation with so many opinions that want to be heard. The good will is there because Breturn would be a huge victory and would strengthen the EU but many member countries will want to ensure that there is no special deal for the UK……

I’m skeptical about Burnham. To his credit he has reopened the debate about the UK and the EU. But beyond that he has committed himself to next to nothing. Will he stay the long course of the rejoining process? There are still lots of Lexiters in Labour who could throw him off course…

Grahame Lucas @grahamelucas.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Indeed, and very few people realise how many. The process is very complex and will take years. Thus I’m really skeptical about all this talk of a fast track for the UK

Grahame Lucas @grahamelucas.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Yes, granted. I hear that in EU countries too. But at the end of the day the Commission, the council of Ministers and the European parliament will decide and they will weigh the political and economic advantages and disadvantages up. My guess is they’ll say yes if Russia continues to be a threat

Grahame Lucas @grahamelucas.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
The EU will celebrate the UK’s return as that of the prodigal son because a return to the EU would be huge blow to all on the far right and left who want to destroy it. But the terms will not be as favorable as before. Will the Brits accept not been treated as “exceptional”?

Exactly my reading of the situation. All this will only play out after the next GE if there is a mandate to start accession proceedings. We are still a long way away……
010
Grahame Lucas @grahamelucas.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Could be. But the thing Rejoiners need to bear in mind is that if the EU starts moving towards a fast track process custom made for the UK other candidate countries will want to know why they don’t qualify. This could cause significant problems

Just a reminder to all those hoping the UK could rejoin in EU quicker than other candidate countries: “The European Parliament has also stressed in its 2026 enlargement resolution that there is no general “fast track” to EU membership”.

If the UK rejoins the SM or the EU there will be budget contributions and no (Thatcher) rebate. That‘s gone forever. So there should a discussion about costs/benefits. But from my perspective there has not been a Brexit dividend in any meaningful form.

Scrapping Brexit without a referendum would mean the next GE decides on rejoin. If it’s a yes, then we would have 4-5 years of negotiations with the EU and a then a GE on the terms. That means about nine to ten years with damage every single year. But it‘s difficult to see how it could go faster

Brexit will dominate the next GE. Burnham will be asking the electorate to agree to rejoin the EU in some form or other. Reform and the Tories will be arguing for the UK to stay out and to leave the ECHR to boot. That would terminate the trade deal with the EU and trigger a no deal Brexit disaster

Grahame Lucas @grahamelucas.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
The EU has other more pressing problems and doesn‘t move at that kind of speed. And if the UK does not compromise on the issues on the table now then the pace will slow further. The EU will defend the single market at all costs. Ten years may not be what many in the UK want but it is realistic
