Cover for Chuck Wendig's THE STAIRCASE IN THE WOODS. It features one of those staircases that wraps in a circle (I'M NOT A STAIRMAKER I DON'T KNOW THE PROPER TERM, OKAY?) in the middle of the woods, backlit by a golden light. There's a bird (I'M NOT A BIRDOLOGIST EITHER, I DON'T KNOW) resting on the railing in the middle of the stairs.Cover for Adam Cesare's INFLUENCER. It's all very '80s pink and pasterl blue, with a hand holding a phone in the center. On the top of the phone is a man staring menacingly, and on the bottom, there's a woman with what looks like fear in her eyes.Cover for T. Kingfisher's WOLF WORM. It has flowers and plants against a black background, going in and out of the white letters of the title. Cover for John Durgin's I WOKE UP A FINAL GIRL. A rusty, dirty knife that's dripping a dark fluid is top center, with a woman in silhouette (OMG I hate trying to spell that stupid word) behind it, looking as if she's leaning up and rubbing her eyes.

If you publish audio through ACX, check your July statements before you pay anyone. Their new royalty model changed the statement layout, and figures taken from the summary tab can come out 66% lower. I said in May this wouldn't be a problem. I was wrong. www.moonstrucksoftware.com/post/acx-s-n...

So, I did a thing. It started with a series of blog posts, that was supposed to turn into a 20 page how to guide and instead became a full sized book because I realise that no one ever talks about how you do this stuff properly and so many small presses manage by trial and error

This (along with the book review I posted earlier) has really made my day. When an indie press titan like Jen from Raw Dog Screaming Press gives an endorsement like this, it makes 3 years of design and development worthwhile

Yeah, but its tricky. The ads work for me now but they did tank last year. Only worth doing with a series with audiobooks to be honest and fb keeps messing with them so what works now might die horribly in a week

@graemereynolds.com @graemereynolds.com · 23/05/2026
I'm doing OK on them at the moment. Went from a return on ad spend of about 2.22 to 3.92 last week (in part helped by someone clearing out a bunch of audiobook codes from a site for a title created in 2016). Only worth it if you have a series with audiobooks tbh

It's frustrating for the authors but also for those of us who run reputable small presses. There are plenty of systems out there that can automate author royalty statements. It doesnt have to be a spreadsheet nightmare. And once a presses reputation is gone, it never comes back.

If I want something to help me track down a python bug or scan a manuscript for plot holes, i probably don't need it to understand quantum physics, haberdashery techniques and agricultural trends of the 17th century. The tool and agent use is where llms are useful right now

My personal stack at the moment is qwen3.5 122b for heavy analytics work with gemma4 27b for almost everything else. Sounds like qwen 3.6 32b might have the big model beat. The frontier models just keep throwing more data and more tin at advancement but smaller fine tuned ones are the future i think

Their Gemma model and qwen 3.5 are the first ones i've found genuinely useful locally hosted.(not tried qwen3.6 yet). The idea that these can run on a 16gb macbook air completely offline does change things in terms of use case and maybe having smaller specialist local models is the way forward

I do a lot of open source llm work because I needed to learn it for my day job. The Chinese models (qwen3.5 in particular) have been very impressive, but bizarrely google released an open source series (Gemma 4) where the smallest will run on a decent spec phone and the 8b one runs fine on a mac

What seems to have passed execs by is that Garbage In, Garbage Out applies even more to AI coding. To get anything even vaguely passable you need to give it explicit, unambiguous requirements. And after 30 years in IT I can tell you that requirement design has always been a problem.

Just delisted every title I had with them. Honestly, most titles didn't really do much anyway and I checked the last years sales from and its just not worth continuing. Putting everything back in KU now and abandoning the wide experiment.

My own sales profile is a little different - I am about 40/40/20 between KDP, ACX and Ingram. The D2D sales make up a tiny percentage of sales. The audiobooks generally are the most lucrative, certainly on a title by title basis.

🖋️📖💰 - #indiepublisher #indieauthorlife I've run a small press for over 15 years and one of the biggest pains is the royalty run each month. It can take hours extracting the info you need from spreadsheets. So, I wrote a tool that does it automatically for KDP. And I'm giving it away free.
