My PhD advisor, Peggy Sanday, published Fraternity Gang Rape (1990). She found gang rape functions as male bonding through domination: men use women to prove masculinity, gain status, & demonstrate loyalty. I know lots of libs have had a field day making “closeted gay” jokes about Hegseth, and not only are they homophobic, they’re also wrong. It’s simpler than that, as Jazz points out. Hegseth is obsessed with penises because he honestly believes his is the only thing special about him, and thus men.

I am lucky to have not been sexually assaulted or raped by a colleague but cis men in academia behave like cis men in power everywhere & the Cornell case makes me so angry we’re not doing shit about the rape culture at universities still. It’s not just frat parties. It’s the institutions, too.

the horrific cornell gang rape case has me thinking about emma sulkowicz who alleged she was raped as a student at columbia in 2014 and never got any justice. it has me thinking about the physical and mental weight young women are forced to carry while their safety is subsumed by male potential.
