(Unless, of course, I follow through on my threat to hard pivot to posting exclusively about anime. But even then, I won’t be here often, and certainly not for the next little while.) -30-

I have thoughts on the state of journalism and the brokenness of Congress, which I covered for five years. But, honestly, this isn’t the venue. I’m taking a hiatus (perhaps permanent) from this site. If you think of me, think of me touching grass, unaware of discourse. 9/

I’m very proud of my reporting on the social safety net, including deep dives on SNAP, WIC, TANF, Medicaid, the child tax credit, and other programs which help keep millions of Americans out of poverty. I’m grateful for the trust placed in me by sources. It was an honor to tell their stories. 8/

My 2025 report from Alaska, with bylines in Anchorage, Nome, and the village of Unalakleet, looking at difficulties in accessing food and medical care in the Last Frontier—and how looming changes to SNAP and Medicaid would affect the state. newrepublic.com/article/2027...

Inside the Hunger Crisis in America’s Last Frontier
Alaska’s unique challenges make it difficult to obtain healthy food and adequate medical care. Are the Trump administration and Congress making it worse?

I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had as a journalist. I traveled across the country, from AZ to MT to AK to KS and more, speaking to folks I’d never otherwise have met. The most important thing I’ve learned: People are people, no matter where or who they are. 2/

Some personal news: Today is my last day at The New Republic. I’m also, at least for now, leaving journalism altogether. I am very proud of the work I’ve done at TNR and throughout my career, but I'm ready to close this chapter of my life and begin another. 1/

I was not immune to the appeal of Endgame! I cheered in theaters in 2019 like everyone else. But I really think overall making it was a huge mistake because Doomsday just seems unnecessary

not the point but every time I see a picture of Endgame's final battle I'm reminded of how visually muddy and frankly ugly it was

I became an anime fan in the past two years, and truly some of the greatest TV I've ever seen was anime. But that'll never be included in lists like this. We have to make room for two versions of The Office

Grace Segers @gracesegers.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
ALL I'LL SAY is that top 100 lists in general are always bad, but top 100 TV show lists are especially terrible because they: a) are too American-centric b) overlook little-seen gems c) mostly ignore genre shows d) completely dismiss animated shows e) almost always make Breaking Bad the top (wrong)

I knew - I KNEW - The Wire and Breaking Bad would be the top two. And I hoped they'd get the correct one at the top. But I also knew they wouldn't.

Grace Segers @gracesegers.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
It's hard because the list is terrible overall but a broken clock etc.

Grace Segers @gracesegers.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
It's impossible to ever take these kinds of lists seriously (always marred by recency bias, are American-centric, and of course miss little-seen gems), but this was truly a new low
