The Trump administration's lawless killing spree at sea continues with a lethal strike on four more supposed "narco-terrorists" in the Caribbean. Very real killing in a make-believe war. Outside of war the general term for premeditated killing is murder.

Today, @jbentonheath.bsky.social argues that, on the high seas, we may be witnessing the death of one of the liberal order’s central myths: that sanctions are peaceful alternatives to war.

ICE’s pending $30 billion budget exceeds the military spending of nearly every country, including Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and Iran. ICE + CBP funding for 2026 would total $66 billion, higher than all but 7 militaries worldwide.

The Trump-Vance admin has been committing illegal strike after illegal strike. They're trying to normalize it. They're counting on you to lose track, to be too overwhelmed to remember the gravity of what they're doing. But we're keeping track of every single strike. So far: 22 strikes. 87 killed.

Du Bois wrapped/serpentine bar chart seemed apt for this one. Code: observablehq.com/d/a207f5c57a...
Bar chart comparing global military spending in 2023, at $2.44 trillion, with the newly agreed annual climate finance goal of $300 billion. The military spending bar, styled as a serpentine blue bar, is about 8 times longer than the pink bar representing the climate finance goal. The title reads, 'Global military spending in 2023 was about 8x larger than the newly agreed annual climate finance goal,' with a subtitle noting, 'Outcome of COP29. Excludes inflation.'
