Also: (a) you don’t have to choose; you can raise taxes on people making $300K and raise them even more on people making millions of dollars; and (b) the more money you make, the less of it you need, as a percentage. A reminder: for the 25th amendment to be invoked without Trump’s consent, Vance, a majority of Trump’s cabinet, and 2/3 of the house and senate have to agree to vote him out. It’s not happening unless the GOP is more scared of Trump being president than they are of Trump’s voters.

The two-party system has problems. There are reforms that might help, but there are real constitutional and practical impediments to getting them done quickly. And until we get those reforms done, a two-party system is what we will have, so maybe also work on getting the not-Trump folks elected.

Romney gets one thing right: if we do nothing, social security is cut by 23%. This gives Republicans, who want to cut benefits anyway, leverage: if we don't win elections, eliminate the filibuster, and shore up funding, Romney's (terrible) proposal is probably about the best we can expect.

Today, all of us, including our grandmas, truly are headed for a cliff: If, as projected, the Social Security Trust Fund runs out in the 2034 fiscal year, benefits will be cut by about 23 percent.
