A deep interest in the pre-Windows home computer revolution, specifically the 8-bit, Commodore, and Amiga scene that defined that period of immense technological change for the home computer user.

I'll be going to the Portland Retro Gaming 👾 Expo this weekend! I've never been to one, so I don't know what to expect. I do hear good things about it. 🫡 If you happen to bump into me, say "Excuse me"! retrogamingexpo.com

I got this XT-IDE kit so that I could eventually have a "hard drive" in the IBM 5150 that I'm restoring. The XT-IDE by Glitch Works is an open source project. I just love open source hardware!! Especially when it comes to keeping these old machines alive! www.glitchwrks.com/xt-ide
A circuit board design bu Glitch Works showing ICs, switches, connectors, and other circuitboard components. There is a pair of wire cutters and other things as well.

U36 is the 74LS125 and A10 connects directly to pin 3 of U36 ... so I pulled that puppy out of there and tested that chip. It is bad!! 🧐 Do I have an extra 74LS125? Of course not 😖 .. I have lots of logic chips, just not that one. Ordered! In the meantime, testing the floppy drives.

I love GreaseWeazle .. making floppies from 5.25" to 3.5" is so easy. From one 5.25" or 3.5" drive, I can make disks for Apple, Commodore, Amiga, Atari, IBM .. you name it! Same with preserving and making images/backups of floppies -- without spending an arm and a leg! github.com/keirf/grease...

This IBM MDA video card is giving me some "heck"! 🤐Computer POSTs 1 long and 2 short without the video card but when you insert the card, no POST, no display. So I've gone down a lot of rabbit 🐇 holes today.

Dirty IBM 5150 power supply. Cleaned as well as I could and recapped, except for those two 200V 3300uF .. they tested better than those I was going to replace them with.

Clean up the motherboard, cards, the two floppy drives and recapped the power supply. Tested the power supply connected to the motherboard .. no magic smoke!! All chips on the MB are cool except for the D8284A (U11) .. that chip is hot .. is that supposed to be hot? Anyone know?

Our favourite Commodore Amiga benchmarking software SysInfo hasn't been updated since 2021, so @stefanreinauer.bsky.social completely wrote a new version called XSysInfo, posted on Aminet with the latest release 0.11.0 yesterday on 9/26/2026 aminet.net/package/util... github.com/reinauer/xSy...

Making some slight improvements to the Commodore 1084 (Magnavox) monitor feet. Had missing/damaged feet, so using OpenSCAD to create replacements. This improvement adds insert for the seating of 12mm rubber pads... instead of pad slipping. I do have to add supports but they remove easily.

I obtained a 1980's Nintendo NES-001, thought it would be fun to repair. My kids (and yes, me) had one and thought it would be fun to fix up and show it to the grandkids... Except it works. 🥴 Oh well, I'll take it all apart to see if I can't mess something up. A hunt, anyone? 🦆

Today was a day of working on little things. A new power switch for the Magnavox CRT and aligning the picture. Soldering a bunch of resistors and other components on the RAM testers .. and then some time to prep and bake an apple pie (it's apple season!!) 🍎🥧

With the state of AI, state sponsored hackers, the mass firings and the brain drain at CISA, I've decided to air gap my finances with Gold Disk's Desktop Budget for the Commodore Amiga.

After I bought my Commodore Amiga 500, I first modded it to accept Kickstart 1.3 .. then I had to mod it to be able to have 1MB chip RAM with the new Fatter Agnus. Then last, I added the SubSystem 500 (a barter) with a SCSI controller and 30 MB 👀 hard drive AND a 2MB Supra SupraRAM board. 💨

So many components go to landfills. I try to e-cycle where I can. Often finding what I need on discarded PCB boards. I reuse these. Less often for important things like computers and monitors but for many other less-critical projects. Do you try to reuse components?

Replaced the flyback transformer in a Magnavox COLOR 40 (CM8702) just in time to play a round of Jumpman on my Commodore 64. Shipped from Germany, it took 24 days to arrive. The Magnavox Color 40 is a lower resolution sister of the Commodore 1084 (Philips/Magnavox version)

Well I'll be darned!! One Amiga 1000 wouldn't boot when connected to the CM8562 monitor - even if monitor was off. BUT you could boot the Amiga and THEN connect the monitor and everything is fine. Easy solution: buffer the Vsync and the Hsync with a 104 (100 nF) capacitor. Easy peasy and it WORKS!

It Worked! Worked!! Worked!!! Mostly. Amiga 1000 won't boot with the monitor connected, even if the monitor is turned off. BUT if I disconnect the monitor, THEN boot the A1000 and THEN plugin in and turn on the monitor, IT WORKS! Nice and Analog RGB crisp too! The boot issue though .. ideas!?!?

OK @commodoreofficial.bsky.social .. you didn't respond, so I had to print my own Commodore 64 case. With ugly brown filament. Cured the two pieces together with UV resin and it as good as... good. This is for my C64 testing station, so I just needed the bottom portion of the case.

OK. It doesn't look pretty but have cleaned up all the battery leakage (I hope) on the Rejuvenator board for the Commodore Amiga 1000. Tested traces. Replaced a few caps and resistors as well. Covered exposed parts with nail polish. Then created a CR2032 battery replacement board for the RTC.
