when ai leaves u behind
7 panel comic.

Panel 1:
A Red Guy with AI across his chest looks like he’s about to run away. A Yellow Guy stands next to him. Red Guy says “I’m the future, buddy. You comin’?”
Yellow Guy replies “Nah”

Panel 2:
Red Guy is almost out of the panel. He leans in and says “Enjoy getting left behind, pal”
Yellow Guy replies “ok”

Panel 3:
Yellow Guy stands alone.

Panel 4:
Close up on Yellow Guy, there is a quiet “huff-huff-huff” noise coming from behind him

Panel 5:
Yellow Guy turns to look behind him

Panel 6:
Close up on Yellow Guy’s face as if from the point of view of an attacker.
Yellow Guy yells “Jesus Christ”

Panel 7:
AI Red Guy is now chasing the Yellow Guy.
Red Guy: “Use me”
Yellow Guy “No”
Red Guy “USE ME”

the whole "AI slowdown" thing reminds me of something that I saw outside of a party in college. i was smoking a cigarette and watching a group of drunk fratboys try to slowly drive an SUV down a flight of stairs and into a courtyard.

Emailed all (17) submissions in classical analysis today with the mail below. 8 papers already had a statement (1 of them that no AI was used). The AI statements I read were varying from rather imprecise tot very precise (1 of them).
Dear colleagues

I have seen that you have put a new preprint today on the classical analysis section of arxiv.
Congratulations on your new work!

I am sure you are aware of the tremendous, accelerating and complicated impact LLMs and AI have on our field (culminating so far in the news on Navier-Stokes last week).

For that reason, I plan to contact all authors in the classical analysis section (closest to my own mathematical niche) this week with the request to add an AI usage statement in their paper.
Such a statement could be:
-	No AI was used at all (e.g. see https://arxiv.org/pdf/2607.19207)
-	AI was only used for typesetting and language clean-up
-	AI was used in a research capacity (be explicit, see e.g. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2609.03651 or https://arxiv.org/pdf/2608.18024 for some examples)
-	Funding received from AI companies, or early access to new models should be disclosed as well. Also be explicit about precisely which models you have used.

I think it is crucial for our community of mathematicians to know how new results have been obtained, and I strongly believe such a statement will be beneficial for us all.

All the best
Hendrik

So it's getting clear that some of the math abilities AI models have become ❝superhuman❞ at is “not giving credit where credit is due”, like “failing to cite previous work on the subject that inspired you” and, worse, “stealing colleagues' ideas”. 🧵⤵️

I joined for a lot of reasons (even before the Navier-Stokes situation). For the past several months, it has felt like the only voices we have heard are those saying that it is inevitable that AI will become a major part of the math community. But it doesn't have to be that way!

I do not wade into discussions often, but I find the math community rallying around Alpöge, Buckmaster, and Coiculesco troubling. Like it or not by collaborating with Alpöge and using LLMs I think you are stepping outside of academic mathematics and into a PR war between Anthropic and openAI. (1/8)

Even if you don't think there was plagiarism involved with the OpenAI solution of the Navier-Stokes problem, they admit they began working on the problem "after hearing a rumor" that others were close to a solution. The threw $22mil at the problem to scoop mathematicians.

And you have to ask yourself: why was it worth $22M to them? Because to them math is just their most successful PR bid, (since the claims of AGI aren't sticking). They are betting that the (false) claim "We solved math, so we can solve everything" will gain them way more than $22M in market share.
