GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Started listening to GENKI 1 audio files - it’s helpful because it’s recorded in Japanese and English with conversations then key nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and interjections. Lots of repetition and exercises. This was the text book we used on the first course I did at Manchester. 今空はピンクです! 000
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 03/10/2026My listening skills are so poor compared to writing. I need to improve dramatically. I feel a bit lost now I don’t have a teacher, and I miss my syllabus. Tomorrow, I think I’m going to review my last few weeks of learning, go back to my workbooks, then come up with a plan. Two months to N5. 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I am now imagining your cat, Sebastian, genuflecting on entering a chapel. Good job. 110
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 01/10/2026裏切り者/うらぎりもの Meaning ‘traitor’ or betrayer, turncoat or backstabber. No prizes for guessing what I’m watching tonight. 001
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 01/10/2026For me, it’s Childline. Not just a telephone support service but increased society’s understanding of children’s experiences and challenges. 020
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 30/09/2026家族/かぞく Family The kanji means house/home and clan or group. Now on my list to learn. 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 30/09/2026I thought flat earth guy was good but this one, excuse the pun, trumps him and wins by a country mile. There’s even self-reflection breaking out, but his homophobia and what other people think has the better of him in the end. One of the best displays of internal conflict I think I’ve ever seen. 011
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I would class this as the middle of the night. Just woken up. First verse of the Japanese language Fraggle Rock theme song is in my head. Bits I couldn’t remember have appeared. Just done it (silently, don’t want to wake anyone). Wasn’t a fluke - repeated it four times. Motivation boosted! 110
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Not much Japanese done today but I did practise the Fraggle Rock theme song at work. Didn’t remember all but have the first three lines. Interesting that I can’t remember the lyrics until I start singing with the tune. Once I start singing it to the music, the words come automatically. 020
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Learning the Japanese language version of the Fraggle Rock theme song is going well. I can say the lines now and I’ve memorised a couple of them. The character names are trickier: 僕らゴーボー モーキー ウェンブリー ブーバー レッ Not so much pronunciation but speed of delivery - はやいです! 130
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Sadly not. Last films I watched were the new Spidernan movie (should read Spider-Man but I liked the typo and am imagining the storyboard for it right now), and the Green Day movie - both worth a trip to the cinema. 110

GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Operation 日本語のフラグルロック! One line at a time 🙂 ダンスでハッピー なやみはおあずけさ リズムに乗って フラグルロックで 仕事でハッピー なやみはおあずけさ 遊ぼうよ 僕らゴーボー モーキー ウェンブリー ブーバー レッド ダンスでハッピー なやみはおあずけさ リズムに乗って フラグルロックで フラグルロックで 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I had a break from kanji today. My colleague gave me a challenge. To sing the Fragile Rock theme tune in Japanese. I’ve located it and I’m going to give it a go. Could take some time. 120
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Thanks. I did spend a few months learning radicals a couple of years ago but stopped to focus on broader syllabus/curriculum content for the GCSE qualification. I think it would be useful to restart radicals. 👍 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Japanese - a lot of effort for a little bit of progress. Worth it, regardless. Would it be much quicker to learn if I lived in Japan? I think it would. Anyway, むずかしい/難しい = difficult Going to take ages this one - doesn’t really look like any of the ones I’ve learnt so far. Is this deliberate? 🫠 130
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 23/09/2026I’ve never actually listened to a flat earth person explain how it all works. Fascinating. I’m also wondering what the complicated version of this is. 020
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Felt like I had no control of my car for a few months. Now I can’t change back - really easy. Nearly crashed my mum’s manual when I got in that. Couldn’t believe how complicated it was. Prepare for not being able to go back to gear changing. 020
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Chuckie Egg - loved it so much. Hooked and up til all hours on my Dragon32. Those were the days… 000
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Looks like there’s a missing し from the sentence I wrote, attempting to correct last night’s. Should read している。 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026I’ve had a go at everything from the last week here. I’ll check against last night’s attempt too - hopefully mistake free but no promises. 120
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 21/09/2026I think yesterday’s sentence goes like this: 私はあなたに会ことを楽しみにしてる。 I can see three mistakes so I’ll have another go tomorrow. 😐 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Happy birthday Lee’s granny. Greetings from Chorley, Lancashire. X 000
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 21/09/2026It’s not but I do love Mr Gum. Shabba me whiskers, I wonder if Andy Stanton’s a Beatles fan. 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Remembered 元気. Not sure why I found it easier. I’ll take it. Had my fortnightly chat with Riojisan/りょうじさん. I’m in need of chatty phrases, like ‘look forward to it’ and ‘laters’. He gave me this: 私はあなたに会ことを楽しみにしています。 My challenge is to remember the structure as well as kanji for ‘meet’ and ‘fun’. 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Much harder getting through secondary school with our second. Often thought our school choice was a mistake. 18 and 19 now - got through it. Different challenges now. UK system is different but being a parent is universal - whatever decision, you’re their best advocates. You’ll find a way through. 001
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Studied the stroke order and practised the kanji for ‘Are you well?’ お元気ですか。 Will check I can still remember tomorrow. Also spotted it’s a な adjective too. Good to know. 😉👌 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Well, as predicted, I remembered part of the kanji in ‘おげんきですか’, the number two with legs (元), but the other bit has gone from my head. げんきじゃないです。(Well I am not.) Must try harder. 🙂 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Japanese language learning today: げんき/元気 = well お元気ですか = Are you well? Going to attempt this. Will it be easier because I’m looking at the first part and thinking it looks like a number two (not that kind of number two 😬) with legs? 020
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Much easier tonight. I think I’ve remembered everything. 🤞 Got my Japanese N5 test in December. Much more focus on reading, grammar and listening. Maybe because they are easier to assess? No speaking or writing. At least I think that’s what I’m in for. 120
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 15/09/2026As the term shuffles along, I’m less inclined to pick up a pen a paper to practise. Not sure if this is right. Soon find out now when my auto kanji kicks in on the Japanese keyboard… 私は日本語お勉強することが大好きです。 I love studying Japanese language. Ok, so 私 is missing its skirt and I’m missing a き。Owt else? 020
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 14/09/2026I can’t remember anything tonight. おぼえません。 つごくつかれました。I’m very tired. 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 13/09/2026You’re right, I agree they should be on here - departments shouldn’t be communicating on there, just monitor content and take action. Maybe that’s why they’ll struggle to come off. Acknowledging how bad it is, they’d have to do something about it. I only see screenshots reposted here - bad enough. 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 13/09/2026In some ways I’m glad. I don’t feel safe around ofsted, never mind twitter. 101
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Well, I’ve remembered one of my three kanji challenges from last week: £5 million = ごひゃくまんえん/5000000 Unfortunately, it’s been superseded by the need to learn £36 million and £72 million. 🙄 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Always go to the vice chancellor, when you think you’ve hit a wall. Sister was kicked off her course - multiple markers/conflicting feedback - and repeatedly told no way back. Wrote to VC, sister reinstated and a rule change implemented to ensure same thing didn’t happen to someone else. 110
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 12/09/2026I checked this sentence I included on a previous post: はたらくことはふべんです。 I wasn’t sure about it. Now I think it’s this: はたらくのはふべんです。 I used ‘こと’ but maybe ‘の’ is accurate. Not sure if my attempt was completely wrong or why it was wrong. 🫠 000
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 11/09/2026しごとはつかれました。とてもねむい。 Work was tiring. I’m very sleepy. So, my Japanese study this evening is all about making sentences up from language I already have and watching Masterchef - which has been much enhanced by its new presenters. 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 10/09/2026始めて - for the first time. 始めてすしを食べました。 I ate sushi for the first time. I’m not managing as much Japanese study now the new term has started. 🙁 はたらくことはふべんです. Not sure this is right - will check tomorrow. 000
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 09/09/2026I saw the kanji for starting something today and really liked it. このかんじが大好きです。 Maybe because it has a few familiar elements. It’s a versatile kanji with components that are easier for me to remember. かんじを覚えます。 000
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 09/09/2026I also use a childbirth comparison when helping apostrophe for omission/contraction stick. Science imagery for suspense and tension in a story - physics and car/bike references help students with these concepts. Gives them a greater depth of understanding - rather than just words that sound good. 010
GoodEvans @goodevans.bsky.social · 09/09/2026I use construction analogy when helping learners understand structuring a text. Works a treat with disengaged students in KS4 who never understood that writing is making something. Same as building a house - structured differently depending on purpose and audience. Planning, choices, effectiveness. 220
