Started listening to GENKI 1 audio files - it’s helpful because it’s recorded in Japanese and English with conversations then key nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and interjections. Lots of repetition and exercises. This was the text book we used on the first course I did at Manchester. 今空はピンクです！

My listening skills are so poor compared to writing. I need to improve dramatically. I feel a bit lost now I don’t have a teacher, and I miss my syllabus. Tomorrow, I think I’m going to review my last few weeks of learning, go back to my workbooks, then come up with a plan. Two months to N5.

I would class this as the middle of the night. Just woken up. First verse of the Japanese language Fraggle Rock theme song is in my head. Bits I couldn’t remember have appeared. Just done it (silently, don’t want to wake anyone). Wasn’t a fluke - repeated it four times. Motivation boosted!

Not much Japanese done today but I did practise the Fraggle Rock theme song at work. Didn’t remember all but have the first three lines. Interesting that I can’t remember the lyrics until I start singing with the tune. Once I start singing it to the music, the words come automatically.

Learning the Japanese language version of the Fraggle Rock theme song is going well. I can say the lines now and I’ve memorised a couple of them. The character names are trickier: 僕らゴーボーモーキーウェンブリーブーバーレッ Not so much pronunciation but speed of delivery - はやいです！

Japanese - a lot of effort for a little bit of progress. Worth it, regardless. Would it be much quicker to learn if I lived in Japan? I think it would. Anyway, むずかしい/難しい = difficult Going to take ages this one - doesn’t really look like any of the ones I’ve learnt so far. Is this deliberate? 🫠

Remembered 元気. Not sure why I found it easier. I’ll take it. Had my fortnightly chat with Riojisan/りょうじさん. I’m in need of chatty phrases, like ‘look forward to it’ and ‘laters’. He gave me this: 私はあなたに会ことを楽しみにしています。 My challenge is to remember the structure as well as kanji for ‘meet’ and ‘fun’.

Studied the stroke order and practised the kanji for ‘Are you well?’ お元気ですか。 Will check I can still remember tomorrow. Also spotted it’s a な adjective too. Good to know. 😉👌

Well, as predicted, I remembered part of the kanji in ‘おげんきですか’, the number two with legs (元), but the other bit has gone from my head. げんきじゃないです。(Well I am not.) Must try harder. 🙂

Much easier tonight. I think I’ve remembered everything. 🤞 Got my Japanese N5 test in December. Much more focus on reading, grammar and listening. Maybe because they are easier to assess? No speaking or writing. At least I think that’s what I’m in for.

As the term shuffles along, I’m less inclined to pick up a pen a paper to practise. Not sure if this is right. Soon find out now when my auto kanji kicks in on the Japanese keyboard… 私は日本語お勉強することが大好きです。 I love studying Japanese language. Ok, so 私 is missing its skirt and I’m missing a き。Owt else?

Well, I’ve remembered one of my three kanji challenges from last week: £5 million = ごひゃくまんえん/5000000 Unfortunately, it’s been superseded by the need to learn £36 million and £72 million. 🙄

I checked this sentence I included on a previous post: はたらくことはふべんです。 I wasn’t sure about it. Now I think it’s this: はたらくのはふべんです。 I used ‘こと’ but maybe ‘の’ is accurate. Not sure if my attempt was completely wrong or why it was wrong. 🫠

I saw the kanji for starting something today and really liked it. このかんじが大好きです。 Maybe because it has a few familiar elements. It’s a versatile kanji with components that are easier for me to remember. かんじを覚えます。

日本語を勉強することがむずかしいを思います。 I think studying kanji is difficult. I’m sure I’ve left a particle out - after むずかしい I feel like there should be something before the を。 I’ll check and correct then try to negate the sentence tomorrow . 今日は私ねむいです。

Maybe I need to use squared paper. 😬 I had another go - I can remember the strokes and the order but it’s not the neatest. 日本語を勉強することが好きですか。Do you like studying Japanese? My English handwriting is not neat so I’m seriously going to struggle to make my kanji look neat. 😂

Went back to last week’s kanji. I can remember 勉強 and wrote sentence: 日本語を勉強していますか。Do you study Japanese? I then tried using it as a noun using grammar from GCSE. 日本語を勉強することが好きですか。Do you like studying Japanese? Is it right? Had to look up kanji for ‘like’. Learnt a while ago but couldn’t remember.

勉強 - I think I have remembered it. The top strokes on both parts are a problem for me so I’ll be repeating them until it’s automatic. Tomorrow I intend to start learning the kanji for ‘corrupt’, ‘5 million’, and ‘illegal’.

Almost got it - 勉強 I could only remember some of the components at first and had to start in the middle. Once I had those, other segments came back too. This has happened with a few kanji. I’d like to be able to remember the correct stroke order.

Success remembering kanji today. Made some mistakes but the ones I remembered within a sentence are the three that stuck best. I wanted to learn the kanji ‘to study’/勉強 for GCSE but didn’t. I love the way it looks but it has a lot of strokes. I’m going to take this on next. がんばります。I’ll do my best.

ただいま。I’m home. Learning kanji for ‘today’ 今日 ‘younger sister’ 妹 and ‘come’ 来。 I think I have them and can see now+day in the first and the woman+not yet in the second. Not sure about ‘come’. I’m going to attempt to remember the kanji from before going to Leeds and try these ones again tomorrow.

Back to learning kanji tomorrow. Last day of festival to day. しゅまつはわたしたちはおんがくをきってダンスをしました。たのしかったです。フェステバルがだいすきです。 At the weekend, we listened to music and danced. It was fun. I love a festival. Not sure of katakana here but worth a go. Will post kanji work over next week. Comments welcome. 🙏

I’m late to Japanese practise today. きょうはいもうととリーズフェステブルにきました。I came to Leeds Festival with my younger sister today. Hope this is accurate. I’ll write a sentence from memory each day and check on Monday at home. I need to learn kanji for ‘sister’ and ‘come’. I can read the kanji but not write them.

Learning Japanese kanji for sadness and grief today. 悲しみ、悲しい、悲しむ。I’m going to remember the top means ‘not’ and the bottom, which was in yesterday’s kanji, means ‘heart’. The top looks like something broken in half. Noun, adjective, verb.

I’ve practised 覚える and 思う (かんじをれんしゅうしました.) and just have to remember them at various points over the next few days and check they’re right. One kanji has 9 strokes, the other has 12. Not sure it helps me much to know that but it might.

I need to remember the difference between おもいます (think) and おぼえます (remember) and learn the kanji. I’m a very slow learner. If I learn one or two words in a week and remember a simple grammar pattern, I’m happy. 🙂
