I want to understand how learning happens so I chose to study Japanese language. So far, I think it’s helping push against brain ageing and given me more respect for high school students. Is it possible to learn a new language at 50?

Chuckie Egg - loved it so much. Hooked and up til all hours on my Dragon32. Those were the days…
Screenshot of classic video game Chuckie Egg from the early 1980s. Black background with green platforms and magenta ladders. Aim was to collect all the yellow eggs dotted about the platforms without being caught by the patrolling blue ostrich-like birds or the flying yellow bird which was released from its cage (top left of screen) in later rounds.

I’ve had a go at everything from the last week here. I’ll check against last night’s attempt too - hopefully mistake free but no promises.
Handwritten page of Japanese language practice with English language translations. It says: I look forward to meeting you. Are you well? I didn’t remember. I also like Japanese language study. Japanese language study is difficult.

Much easier tonight. I think I’ve remembered everything. 🤞 Got my Japanese N5 test in December. Much more focus on reading, grammar and listening. Maybe because they are easier to assess? No speaking or writing. At least I think that’s what I’m in for.
Handwritten Japanese practice. Says: I love studying Japanese language. Written in Japanese, including kanji, along with English translation.

As the term shuffles along, I’m less inclined to pick up a pen a paper to practise. Not sure if this is right. Soon find out now when my auto kanji kicks in on the Japanese keyboard… 私は日本語お勉強することが大好きです。 I love studying Japanese language. Ok, so 私 is missing its skirt and I’m missing a き。Owt else?

I saw the kanji for starting something today and really liked it. このかんじが大好きです。 Maybe because it has a few familiar elements. It’s a versatile kanji with components that are easier for me to remember. かんじを覚えます。
Handwritten page of Japanese language practice. Different sentences using kanji for ‘start’ - Is it ok to start? For the first time. Pleased to meet you. Let’s start. Shall we start. Has it started yet?

Maybe I need to use squared paper. 😬 I had another go - I can remember the strokes and the order but it’s not the neatest. 日本語を勉強することが好きですか。Do you like studying Japanese? My English handwriting is not neat so I’m seriously going to struggle to make my kanji look neat. 😂
Handwritten Japanese practice. Kanji for ‘Japanese language’, ‘like’ and ‘study’.

I had another look and zoomed in on the right. Did something happen in New York, inside a bus? And did something else also happen on the same day? I managed to pick out a few kanji, and read the kana. I really do need to watch it now. 😂

Went back to last week’s kanji. I can remember 勉強 and wrote sentence: 日本語を勉強していますか。Do you study Japanese? I then tried using it as a noun using grammar from GCSE. 日本語を勉強することが好きですか。Do you like studying Japanese? Is it right? Had to look up kanji for ‘like’. Learnt a while ago but couldn’t remember.
Page of handwritten Japanese practice - kanji and hiragana sentences using kanji for ‘study’. Kanji for ‘remember’, ‘think’, ‘heaven’ and ‘sister’ practised too.

ただいま。I’m home. Learning kanji for ‘today’ 今日 ‘younger sister’ 妹 and ‘come’ 来。 I think I have them and can see now+day in the first and the woman+not yet in the second. Not sure about ‘come’. I’m going to attempt to remember the kanji from before going to Leeds and try these ones again tomorrow.
Photo of a page of Japanese practice writing. Mixture of hiragana, katakana and kanji, focusing on learning and using vocabulary for ‘today’, ‘younger sister’ and ‘come’. Sentence says ‘Today I came to Leeds Festival with my younger sister.’ in hiragana and repeated with core vocabulary written in kanji with component meanings explained.

Wallace and Gromit statues in Preston. Wallace, in his ‘Wrong Trousers’ trousers, is grinning - trademark wide with teeth showing - standing in front of Preston Market with one leg up to the side giving a thumbs up whilst Gromit is sat on bench in front with head looking down into a newspaper.

Odesa has aspirations to help with jigsaw puzzles too. I wondered if she would do a ‘Max’ and she hasn’t disappointed.
Small black cat sat on table next to a large partially completed jigsaw of Hokusai’s famous painting The Great Wave. Cat’s tail is covering one corner of the jigsaw.
