I watched the Dutch film "Michiel de Ruyter" ("The Admiral") again last night, and I can't believe I forgot just how brutally the lynching of poor Johan and Cornelis de Witt was depicted. For reference: Here in The Netherlands, we once ate our prime minister and his brother. No, I am not kidding.

Depiction of "The Corpses of the De Witt Brothers" (1672-1675), an old painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Jan de Baen. It shows the dead and mutilated bodies of the brothers Johan and Cornelis de Witt hanging upside down on the Groene Zoodje, the place of execution in front of the Gevangenpoort in The Hague.
