American Truck Simulator's new Illinois and Road Trip DLCs are so much fun... I'm especially enjoying tearing through the streets in a Crown Vic after work every day. I can't wait to see what customizations they add down the line Also - Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights is a hidden gem for the 360...

Time to hack around missing C11 support the wrong way... :) Let's see if this gets Python 3.11 building on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion)!

I'm now starting the post-VCFMW testing :) yesterday I got the show network back up again, so it's time to make sure things still come up and get updates installed on the few things that can get them!

Day -1 complete... and it was a blast! Spent some time with @r-12.net and my friend Eric and got stuff going (for the most part...), and I'm really excited for tomorrow!!!

Dawn of the final day of prep... its setup day! Starting the day off with a last minute round of updates on the Gentoo machine and the BSD VM, and hunting down some mouse pads. Then its time to load up!

Just Tru64 updates and the spare IBM NetVista left to go for the show... the Pro/350, Venturis, and Celebris were all very well behaved and worked pretty much on the first try (even though the Pro/350 was off since the last day of the last VCFMW...) Looking forward to getting everything setup tmrw!

I got the GNU toolkit working on Tru64 and it's sooooo nice to have bash and an extremely early version of GIMP running... the Mozilla suite as well as Netscape work too Come stop by my exhibit at VCF and try it out! I'll post some pictures afterwards for anyone who can't be there

I really enjoy working on Tru64... especially with this UI for SysMan (which is even nicer if you're logged into CDE) It's time to get some user accounts setup for my co-exhibitors and then start getting the Associated Products CDs and patches installed

Doug Reno @godkiller1242.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Some huge success today so far... I was able to finally get Tru64 to cooperate on my show network! Now it just needs the final update kit and a few extra programs and it is ready

Coming to VCF Midwest? If you're like me, it's hard trying to remember where everything is, especially with VCF taking up the ENTIRE expo hall this year. So I made this tool last night: geerlingguy.github.io/vcfmw21-map/ Now it's a lot easier to find exhibitors! #vcfmw

Come visit us at #VCFMW this year! We'll be at tables B415/416 with some DEC terminals and computers (including the 1970 DEC VT05!) and we'll have some Windows boxes to play games on as well (and to interface with the other boxes) The legendary Garfield phone returns as well for another year!

Doug Reno @godkiller1242.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
The VT05 turns on after some repairs and has a blinking cursor!! It still isn't very interested in responding to keyboard input yet, but that'll come another day...

Doug Reno @godkiller1242.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Tearing into the VT05 tonight... I'm so excited, going to try the first power on tonight since everything looks in good condition at a glance with the exception of some expired foam and nicotine tar from its last home This is the cursor control board, just finished cleaning the other three

Setting up a FreeBSD system for the first time today since it's a lot easier to configure to work with my VT05 (I don't want to have to modify stuff with 'stty' on every boot), and it's been really interesting to work with so far. If it sticks, it'll run on the IBM xServe I'm bringing to VCFMW

Doug Reno @godkiller1242.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Today's goal: Finish the Precision 530 so I can repair the DEC VT05 tomorrow for #VCFMW - just need a handful more games installed and then I need to defrag it and take an image. This one goes to Eric Hanchar's "Divisive Dells Now w/ 100% More Dells!" this year! Bonus goal: catch a nap before WoW

The way that Trainz Simulator handles patches is insane, the forums suggest that they may take 2-8 hours *a piece* for the 2010 and 2012 versions... They decompress 1+GB files from both the patch installer *and* the installed files, run comparisons 1 file a time, and then recompress the 1+GB files!

After reworking some solder joints on the analog side of the VT420, it's functioning much better! It'll be ready for VCFMW after a good dusting :)

Another day, another eBay purchase... this time an AGP graphics card. Tomorrow though the keyboard for my VT420 comes in so that's exciting :)

The journey to get things ready for VCFMW this year can best be described as... fix one thing, two more break... After some time in the basement today and tomorrow though I should get on the other side of it :)

Some more fun for VCF Midwest this year... getting XDMCP working correctly off my 2004 Dell PowerEdge 2850. That is going to be performing a wide variety of background shenanigans at my table... including a guestbook and driving several terminals and Xdmcp sessions on the DEC PCs

Getting the DHCP options setup for this scope has certainly been an adventure, massive thanks to @ronscompvids.bsky.social for pointing out that my unattend.xml wasn't getting loaded from WDS :) A DNS Server of 127.0.0.1 certainly won't get you anywhere! DHCP Option 003 tends to be needed too if

DNS my beloved... I was wondering why the VMs I deployed via WDS never showed up in the domain! I think I have a better alternative to this approach, will try setting up RRAS in my Server 2008 R2 VM and see if that does the trick (that way I can drop one of the ethernet adapters in this VM).

Tonight I'm doing some prototyping for VCF Midwest... one of my pain points from last year was that I had an equipment failure *at the show* and had to swap a system, and set it up for the Tru64 portion on Saturday. I want to consolidate both of the laptops that made up my network into a proper

I'm thinking about dusting off the old SCCM 2007 idea I had for my VCF and other retro computer hobby activities... For last year's show, I had two laptops that were running my network. One was a Linux box providing DHCP, DNS, etc. and the other was a laptop running Windows Server to use FreeAXP.
