Today's #WIPSnips is #magic and as my story revolves around abilities and gods and magic, I had a LOT to choose from, but I'm feeling a bit maudlin, so I figured I'd show just how hard Mattie is fighting against what's happening. Poor Girl.

Cameron took a deep breath and let it out. One more thing he was getting familiar with was the way she devalued herself so completely. He knew why, but that didn’t make it any better. “I want you, Matilda, however and whatever that means.”

The disconnect between his words and what she knew to be true was like an impassable glacial crevice, deeper than Matilda could imagine. “But... you can’t.”

This time it was Cameron’s turn to frown. “Why? Why can’t I?”

“Because you’re in love with Theo!”

He let the silence hang for a second, waiting for her eyes to flick back up toward him so she could see his face. “So?”

The cynical part of Matilda raged against so simple a word. ‘So?’ As if it was unimportant that he was in love with someone else, as if it was the most normal thing in the world. “What do you mean? You can’t –“

“Don’t tell me what I can and can’t handle, καρδιά. I promise my heart’s big enough for the two of you.”

Matilda could see the truth in his ocean eyes, but it did little to quell the crash of disbelief echoing through her. “Stuff like that doesn’t happen. Shouldn’t happen. You shouldn’t –“

Cameron didn’t wait for her to continue, cutting her off before she could get any further in her denial. “You want the truth?” He watched her mouth snap close before she nodded. “The truth is that no one has hit me the way you have. Suddenly, and all at once. I don’t care that it’s impossible, or like magic, or inconceivable. You’re so mind-bendingly amazing that my knees go weak. It’s like... any day when I don’t get to see your smile has been wasted. You feel... you feel like home.”

She took a step back from him, crossing her arms over her chest, as if she could intimidate his words as they landed. “You only feel this way because you’re tied to me.”

“You say that as if it’s a bad thing,” he said with a frown, retaking the steps she’d moved.

“You don’t know me.”

“I do.”

“You can’t.”

Cameron gestured through the air with both arms. “And yet, here I am.”

“It doesn’t make sense,” Matilda growled, turning her eyes toward what would have been a blue sky, but was currently colored a stormy grey. Whether that was because of her current mood, she couldn’t be sure. “None of this makes sense. This is dreams, and fate, and past lives, and a billion other things that can’t be real.”

“What is reality, except that which we make of it?” The words sounded just as sure as Cameron felt. “All I can tell you is how I feel, and I want to be with you, Matilda. I choose you, despite how it all came about. You’re in my heart now, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Frustrated, Matilda threw her hands in the air. A flash, and she was suddenly watching herself do the exact same thing in the past. She hadn’t been her, then, and he hadn’t been him, but they’d been arguing like this for years. For lifetimes. The impossibility of it started to weigh on her shoulders, heavy enough to buckle under, but his voice was there, in her head, whispering.
“Tell me you don’t feel the same.”

Matilda opened her eyes, blinking as she looked up at him. He was so close, just a breath away. Her heart began to pound, and her tongue darted out to lick her suddenly dry lips. “Just because I feel it doesn’t make it real,” she whispered back, shaking her head.

This time it was ZZZ who scoffed and gave a hollow laugh. “Oh yeah? What are you going to do to me, huh? I’m already dead!”
“Death is not the worst I could offer,” XXX responded, and the conviction behind the words made it clear he knew he could do what he’d said.
When XXX took another step closer to ZZZ, TTT breezed past the spirit, putting herself in front of ZZZ. “He does not fall within your dominion, and you’ve overstepped.”
XXX looked around at everyone before his roar filled the darkness. “She cannot hold my light without my favor!”
XXX sounded immature, even to Matilda’s ears, but BBB’s voice did not waver as he challenged his fellow Hand. “You do not ask a star to shine, just as you do not ask the wind to stop blowing. It is simply truth, and the truth is that you’re out of your depths, XXX.”
Fists clenched at his sides, like he wanted to keep fighting but held himself back, XXX gave BBBB a dark glare before he spun around to look at Matilda, who was still on the ground. “I will bring an end to this fighting, one way or another.” In a burst of blinding white light, the Hand disappeared.

Matilda couldn’t remember the last time she’d been out on a Saturday night. Her schedule didn’t normally allow for such things. Between school work and work work, having a thriving social life seemed like an impossibility. Too little time, too many responsibilities. She’d hadn’t been allowed out before, and a thread of hesitation strummed through her at the thought. She still wasn’t used to deciding things on her own, but that was getting better with the help of her best friend.

Finding and befriending Grace had been like some kind of miracle, like a light at the end of a tunnel. When she’d arrived in Iowa, Matilda had been so far in her own head, broken and shattered and trying to put her pieces back together, and it felt like the universe had intervened and assigned the most stubborn woman in the entire state as her roommate. Nothing about Grace was halfway. Once she’d decided you were her friend then that was the end of it. Grace was warm, and kind, and Matilda would jump in front of a bullet for her and do so with a smile on her face.

So why, then, did Matilda feel like she was cheating on her best friend with a new group of people? Grace had been the one encouraging her to get out there, but some dark part of Matilda’s brain fed on the guilt the thought carried in its wake. Grace had other friends, of course, but everyone was friends with Grace. Matilda tried repeating that in her head, over and over, as she lifted a hand to knock on JC & Cassie’s apartment’s door.

Hell yes, we’re going to this in Chicago. I can’t wait!! I’ve been to McCormick Place several times for the auto show, but I’m ready for a revisit! The other O&CE we went to in Dubuque was a bit lackluster. I know Chicago will represent. Some of the best concerts of my life happened in that city.
