This is an emergency. ‼️ Bex’s surgery wound is gaping and they need $263 to pay the upfront costs of getting medical help. They have stage 4 cancer and I don’t think they should go home like this. Black lives matter. Bex’s life matters. Please don’t make them wait. Their link: bit.ly/HelpBex

I very strongly believe that gender expression is, or at least can be, instinctive and innate because there are people for whom that’s the only way to interpret their behavior. Similarly with sexuality.

Masculine lesbian girls and women can no more stop being masculine than they can stop being lesbian. I believe we have to see these two dimensions of identity as continuous with each other, so that you can’t separate them.

Homosexual gender non-conformity is an entirely natural, cross-cultural phenomenon, and it does markedly reproduce the presence of a masculine-feminine contrast in many homosexual relationships. There’s an apparent anxiety around this that IMO falls on the shoulders of the GNC person most of all.

This is a good argument overall but I’m uncomfortable with the seeming need to sociologically justify butchness (lbr that’s the “problematic” category here). Why can’t masculinity simply be the natural impulse of the butch? So what if butchfemme does imitate features of heterosexuality?
reconstructive force. Let me suggest a more familiar example. Judith Butler points out that the lesbian categories of "butch" and "femme" are not simple assimilations of lesbianism back into the terms of heterosexuality. Rather, Butler introduces the concept of cultural intelligibility, and suggests that the contextualized and resignified
"masculinity" of the butch, seen against a culturally intelligible "female" body, invokes a dissonance that both generates a sexual tension and constitutes the object of desire.
She points out that this way of thinking about gendered objects of desire admits of much greater complexity than the example suggests. The lesbian butch or femme both recall the heterosexual scene but simultaneously displace it. The idea that butch and femme are "replicas" or "copies" of heterosexual exchange underestimates the erotic power of their internal dissonance.

I guess I’m not sure I agree that anti-effeminacy is a subtype of transmisogyny so much as they’re adjacent phenomena, though in this instance I’m also not sure how big a difference that makes
020
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I tend to really like “anti-effeminacy” for this. Alternately “effemiphobia”
010
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Honestly I’m not sure how comfortable I am anymore classifying this stuff as “misogyny”?
2120
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But homophobia and transphobia also use a lot of the same tropes. “You’re a fag” blurs into “you want to become a girl” pretty quickly.

May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I’ve shared a couple examples before, like dudes catcalling me with stuff like “haha we know you’re actually a dude” tacked on, as if I’d been trying to fool them. This probably makes sense to call clear cut transphobia.
1150
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But if we use a process-based model, which I prefer, it makes more sense to call most of that homophobia or anti-effeminacy. Some of it has been explicit transphobia, but that’s kind of the issue here—the line seems really blurry?
6200
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
For years I’ve been accustomed to using the framework of transphobia/transmisogyny to talk about this, which is more or less an identity-based model for defining the type of violence you’re going through.
3200
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I’m curious what others think about this? 🧵 I’ve been thinking for a while now that I’m not sure exactly what counts as transphobia, because roughly all of the “X-phobic” violence and discrimination I’ve experienced has been while presenting a boy or a man, rather than as a woman.

But they do fundamentally represent *different needs,* NOT different levels of legitimacy.

Some people have more urgent needs for top surgery or genital surgery. Some have more need for HRT. All these things inform treatment decisions and transition plans, so it does help to understand these different presentations.

Trans people don’t all have the same kinds and intensities of dysphoria. Some get more satisfaction from surgical changes than social ones. For others it’s the reverse. For still others it’s a complex overlap.
1181
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
To address the elephant in the room: yes, this applies to the concept of transsexual types. Trans people DO vary in their concerns or emphasis for their transition goals but there’s no broad category of typical motivation that truly “disqualifies” you from being trans.
3528
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But the truth remains that there are a number of reasons someone may choose to transition and the various presentations of transition motivation all come from genuine places of psychological or social need.
1811
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
This is why there’s so much anxiety about whether your choice to transition is legitimate, whether your lived gender is authentic, so on—not only do these concerns reflects our cultural conditions, they reflect natural considerations transsexuals have to take into account.

May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
These all represent cultural norms surrounding gender transition, but older models both still have force in many clinical settings, and continue to influence how trans people think and feel about themselves.

May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
These days there’s been a somewhat greater shift in parts of the world toward a greater freedom of choice model, which is where we get “gender affirming care.”
1851
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
We can actually see how mindsets favoring bottlenecks of trans care have shifted with this, such as from “are you really trans?” to “do you really have gender dysphoria?” which essentially represent the same impetus
1893
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Eventually the clinical emphasis began to shift toward how much suffering the patient had; this is essentially where we get the paradigm of “gender dysphoria.”
2871
May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
“True transsexuality” is a relic from when gender clinical care was organized around clinical necessity on the basis of how well a gender patient would integrate into society by transitioning. This goes back to the oldest Hirschfeld/Benjamin standards.

May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄 @goddessblade.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Maybe one of the most important messages that trans people can internalize is that there is no “true trans.” Transition is a *practical choice* we make based on what will best serve our lives. Transness is a social identity that emerges out of that context.

I learned this behavior from Satan.

The thing that's always been a little difficult to explain is how little ability I had, and have, to hide it? It's not like I didn't realize I was going to keep getting targeted, but somehow it never felt like a choice—especially the micro-behaviors, which are so easy to not even be aware of.

Or for that matter, denied the eggshell. I spent my life from 3-8 expressing identified girlhood pretty freely, especially in the beginning. I had to be told to stop doing it. Those inclinations never went away, either.

The other day I was watching a gay content video and the speaker said "shout out to all the feminine little gay boys, you are the bravest among us because you never got to hide." And it brought tears to my eyes? It's not often I see it acknowledged that some of us were denied even the closet.
