Interestingly loss of the #FimH adhesin disrupted UPEC mucosal associations in vivo, but weirdly dramatically increased its capacity to penetrate the mucus barrier ex vivo

Very happy (and somewhat shocked) to have been awarded an #ERC #CoG grant to study how cervical #mucus prevents intrauterine infection and #preterm birth... looking forward to meeting a new mucosal community! (Watch this space for project linked job ads 🤩)

Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy used to *see* glycans on the mucin Muc1 at the single molecule level. Quite simple structures in this system but very cool nonetheless 😎 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
