I also find it a bit weird ppl freaking out about smart glasses when they are being watched all the time by virtually hidden cameras all over the place (whether small CCTV or Ring doorbells).

What about smart glasses that actually help people see? e.g. glasses that auto adjust prescription. I dont see a luddite approach to this being the solution, just make people legally responsible for their actions.

The Tories are fucked precisely because they have no futuristic vision, they keep harking back to the 80s.

Dont give Messi that much credit, he was captain of the team that championed dirty dirty football and only got to the final because of it. Then you had all that Malvinas nonsense which he also did nothing about. He lost all credit in my eyes when that happened.

It works if you force them into bankrupcy first. Pass a law forcing Ofwat to freeze all bill rises. If they sink and go bankrupt you nationalise for pennies on the pound.

Debt needs to get wiped out with any nationalisation.

Ofwat appoints Grant Thornton to help improve South East Water performance l £6m wasted. Similar exercise at Thames Water yielded zilch. SEW has £1.7bn debt, can't raise new money, loses 100m litres of water a day to leaks, customers fleeced for decades. End the scam. Nationalise water.

Badenoch thinks she is the contender because she has 100+ seats, Farage thinks he is the contender because he is ahead in the polls. Neither will back down, especially when you have millions £££ entering the coffers of Reform, would Farage really give up those millions by doing a deal? I doubt it.

Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 16h
I think if one was massively ahead of the other I think you might be right, but while they are hovering around the same % in the polls and both think they can dominate the other I dont think that will happen.
100
Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 16h
Yes correct, but you are also forgetting how personality driven Reform and the Tories are. And unlike pre-Brexit there is no 1 thing for them to unite over. Farage would never accept Badenoch as PM and Badenoch would never accept Farage. There can only be 1 top dog.

Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 16h
All this is also ignoring the total egotistical nature of both Tories and Reform. There can only be 1 top dog, its Kemi OR Farage.

*Also the salary sacrifice route is closing from 2028, where they will limit salary sacrifice to 2k per annum.
100
Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Most people will way up what they gain and what they lose without sacrificing anything, and for us, the extra income and employer pension contributions was worth more than the child benefit, so we just didnt bother claiming it.
100
Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I think we are talking cross purposes. Yes you can use salary sacrifice to reduce your income below 100k in that scenario but noone in reality is going to do that as it means foregoing a huge amount of income which you cant spend for decades.
300
Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Not sure the above is correct, the max. pension contribution for combined employer/employee is £60k per annum, they are nowhere near that on 120k+20% bonus.
100
Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
True it does, but turning down the promotion or pay rise to keep your benefit means you dont have the additional money to sacrifice, and you dont get the employer match on the money you have turned down.
110
Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The point Im making is that turning down more money would have led to worse consequences than losing child benefit, you dont get employer pension contributions on child benefit, you do on salary. So we just opted not to apply for it to begin with only to hv it clawed back.
100
Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Or you do the opposite. We crossed the 100k threshold around the time we had our first child. Rather than refusing promotions/more money we just didnt bother applying for child benefit. I saw more benefit in the money I earnt w my job than money paid out from the govt, pension contributions being 1.

And Im not saying that Rejoin is prepared. But AI will be one of the last things that the public will make their decisions on. If anything rejoin needs to be much more prepared to argue in favour of Freedom of Movement and why its a good thing.

It then also opens up the possibility for things like Universal Basic Income where how much you and your family earns determines whether you get taxed or receive a credit.

I would like to see the dept for work and pensions abolished and all tax, pensions and benefits system put under HMRC with your tax code determining what payments you get. You cd then have an individual tax code and a family unit tax code which would determine what benefits you receive.

Glostermeteor 🔶 @glostermeteor.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I actually think the debate misses a huge question. Why is our benefits system so antequated that it cant calculate a household income combined? My AI bot can do that in about 10 seconds. I would like to see a complete reform of the benefits and tax system.

To be frank there arent many people that arent over the threshold for care. e.g. If you own a home of any description anywhere in the country you will pay for care. Over 80% of households with a pensioner in it own their own home

In the real world, Labour draws the bulk of its support from people of working age. Meanwhile, the right - the Conservatives, in particular - are heavily reliant on the largely non-productive over-60s.

'to reduce the pension contribution relief for people on higher rate income tax' Its to reduce pension contribution relief for younger people who are still working, while those who are older and benefited from 40 and 45% relief over the years are sitting pretty 'do as I say not as I do'
