We're helping out with this gig at The Globe in Glossop on Saturday night featuring Yorkshire drone legends @soundsofslomo.com and the otherworldly @pefkin.bsky.social. Hope to see some of you down there! Tickets here www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/tbc9-slomo...

Poster for a gig hosted by The Black Circle at The Globe in Glossop on 22 February 2025, featuring Slomo, Pefkin and Black Brunswicker.

Counting the likes of Sunn O))) and Gnod among their champions, Yorkshire drone legends Slomo returned to the live scene in 2024 with sets at Todmordon’s mythical Golden Lion and a sold out show for Stone Club at London’s Heavenly Social. They begin 2025 at “the gateway to the Dark Peak”, playing in support of their recent album "Zen and Zennor", inspired by the ancient sites and spectral otherness of Land's End.

“Melodic patterns as simple as cup and ring stone carvings… a liminal zone of luminous guitar and softly undulating arpeggios… ‘Zen and Zennor’ proves itself a rewarding portal.” (Abi Bliss / The Wire)

“Fizzles with throbbing electrical energy” (Bob Fischer / Electronic Sound)

“The Dons of Drone” (Paddy Shine / Gnod)

Gayle Brogan performs solo under the name Pefkin, creating slowly-unfolding, ritualistic hymnals that draw heavily on the landscape and natural world, using processed violin / viola, electronics, voice and field recordings, her music receiving comparisons to Coil, Popul Vuh, This Mortal Coil and Nico. She has released albums internationally on labels such as Morc, Wild Silence, Nite Hive, Folklore Tapes and Sonido Polifonico. Gayle is also one half of innovative folk duo Burd Ellen, a third of psychedelic electric folk trio Meadowsilver, and has collaborated with cult Irish singer-songwriter Alison O'Donnell and modular synth composer Jonathan Sharp.

“Spooked-out twilight listening that is both unsettling and compelling, drawing you into a private world.” (Ed Pinsent / Sound Projector)

“Something akin to what it must have been like hearing Nico's 'Marble Index' when it was released; alien yet curiously familiar, beautiful yet stark, hypnotic yet troubling.” (Grey Malkin / Active Listener)

Growing up in the American midwest but now living in the English northwest, Black Brunswicker blends delicately picked acoustic guitar with tape loops and textures to create expansive ambient folk soundscapes. With music influenced by travel and nature, her 2022 release ‘High Peaks’ was partly inspired by trips to the Peak District. Her latest album ‘Been Around Here Before’ (Nettwerk Music) is a collection of DIY folk-brushed ambient that balances noise with beauty.

“Black Brunswicker continues to shine as a true innovator on the scene right now.” (Chris Bound / Mystic Sons)

ELVIS’ LOST 60s – a 90th birthday celebration with Matt Hill Thursday 9th January Glossop Labour Club, 8-11pm FREE ADMISSION Full details here (or see alt text): glossoprecordclub.wordpress.com/2024/12/28/9...

Celebrate Elvis Presley’s 90th Birthday with Glossop Record Club.

Happy New Year, record clubbers! We kick off 2025 with a special tribute to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, marking what would have been Elvis Presley’s 90th birthday. Join us at Glossop Labour Club on Thursday 9th January for an evening celebrating his music, hosted by Matt Hill, songwriter, musician, and curator of the Elvis Library.

Matt will take us on a journey through Elvis’s vast discography, focusing on lesser known tracks from the mid-1960s and the fascinating stories behind them. As Matt explains, “Conventional wisdom says that Elvis came out of the Army in 1960 and then he did some crap films until his triumphant ‘Comeback Special’ in 1968. Well it didn’t quite happen like that. You might argue that his first Comeback was in 1960, when he reestablished his career post-Army. I’ll be be arguing that the 68 Comeback actually started in 1966.”

Doors open 8pm, the music kicks off at 8.30 and we’ll round off the night with your Elvis requests. All on vinyl, of course. See you there.
