My periodic futile, hill-I-will-die-on plea to veteran recording artists: there is no point mastering your albums to a DR value of 6. It will not get you played on the radio (radio is no longer relevant) and streaming services don't need you to do it. It just makes your music sound like shit.
A 2026 album mastered to a Dynamic Range level of 6. It sounds bad.

Yeah I don’t have much interest in seeing classic rockers in big Live Nation venues but I’ve recently paid way more than I normally do to see a few big arena shows (Madonna, Tyler, Olivia) and they were all incredible experiences and totally worth it. (I also got in at list price, not resale.)

I avoided arena shows for 20+ years but I’ve seen two in the past couple of years (Tyler the Creator and now Olivia) and I don’t know man…they’re kind of great? Like, the production quality is just bonkers and all the people singing along is so life-affirming.

Found a Kalamazoo Gazette article confirming the Link Wray show I saw was on November 1, 1997. So loud.
Here are my top five choices:

1. Link Wray at Club Soda (Nov. 1). So often experiencing a cult hero firsthand can be completely disappointing, but Link Wray, the creator of the most primal, pounding, feedback-drenched stomp 'n' squall ever to grace the planet, is still firmly pedestal-placed in my pantheon of all things good and pure in rock 'n' roll after this show. Local boys Fortune and Maltese and the Phabulous Pallbearers opened the evening by shaking the roof loose, then Link, pushin' 70 but still goin' strong, hit the stage in his jeans and T-shirt and commenced to blow the lid clean off in his first Michigan appearance since the 1950s. Loud, wild, dedicated, and a nice guy to boot. My ears are ringing just thinking about it.

David Lee Roth turns 72 years old today, so what better time to acknowledge high and low points of his original tenure in Van Halen, who balanced awesome and trivial from 1978 to 1984: One pinnacle and one nadir per album, and sometimes the nadirs aren’t even so low. (But then there’s Diver Down…)

“Bez grabbed some maracas, performed his wild-eyed dancing, and is still doing it 40 years later. ‘Honestly, I can’t believe that I’m still getting away with it,’ he says. ‘I came on to the stage by pure chance and I’ve been on it ever since.’”

‘I was so out of control!’ Bez on cocaine, Happy Mondays, his ‘sexless marriage’ to Shaun Ryder, organic courgettes …
Drugs, drink and dancing made Bez famous. Thirty-five years on, has he really swapped it all for filtered water, intermittent fasting and walks with the dogs?
