120 minutes of songs 1930-'94, captured on cassette circa the latter, largely comprising rescued stray tracks from LPs I was inexplicably weeding — Velvet Underground, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Joy Division, Harmonica Frank, new wavers, etc. I re-create the mix to stream and explain it in detail.

In Rolling Stone this week, Rob Sheffield called 1991 “a fantastic moment for music,” even suggesting 9-24-91 was the “best day ever for new albums.” But only 2 of 4 he names rank among my 150 faves of the year - at #113 and #135, no less! Anyway, 5000 words mapping out where I stand (plus a list):

28 years ago yesterday I endured Korn, Limp Bizkit, Rammstein (who I kinda liked), Ice Cube and Orgy performing a stop on what was I guess ironically called their Family Values tour at Philadelphia’s Spectrum & wrote about for Spin magazine, who almost definitely didn’t pay me enough, considering.

If she hadn’t lost her long and brave battle with breast cancer four years ago, ONJ would have turned 78 today. Here’s something I wrote about her for the Village Voice the year she turned 40 —i.e., a decade after she was Sandy from Grease (aka three years after her last top 40 single in the U.S.)
