This is a “bold jumping spider”. It is a black spider probably no bigger than the diameter of a dime. It has a fuzzy body and its legs are striped. Its eyes are clearly visible and the hairs above its eyes make it look like it has long eyelashes. It has bright, metallic green mouth parts which I believe are called chelicerae. Jumping spiders often seem to be paying attention and have interest in observing me when I observe them. I held my hand out and it jumped right onto it. I transferred it to a flower bed so it could continue pest control in my yard.

This is the view from above of the bold
Jumping spider, it has a small red dot on its back. It is perched on the edge of my lawn bag, which was filled with weeds and I probably accidentally pulled something the spider was on.

If Apple Photo ID is correct, this is a European garden spider and is a type of orb weaver, which means it makes the beautiful spiral webs we see so many of in the fall. It has little hairs all along its legs which are brown and tan striped. It has a patter on the top of its abdomen that is a straight while line running down the center and there are also white lines going across that line.

It was relocated from the lawn bag to the garden so it could continue to live its best life.

A solar farm in Minnesota planted native wildflowers between its panel rows.
Five years later, total insect populations tripled. Native bees increased 20-fold.
Not only did insect populations boom, soybean fields next to the solar arrays got twice as many bee visits as fields farther away.
Two of the things we usually think of as competing turned out to reinforce each other.
One study, published in Environmental Research Letters in late 2024, tracked two utility-scale solar sites built on retired farmland in southern Minnesota, where the developer seeded native prairie species between rows of panels in 2018.
By 2022, the sites looked less like industrial energy infrastructure and more like
remnant prairie.
Goldenrod soldier beetles colonized the goldenrod stands. Bumblebees nested in the soil.
Monarch butterflies passed through during migration. The wildflower diversity grew sevenfold; insect diversity grew eightfold.
This matters because, like it or not, utility-scale solar is going to take up real space.
The US is on track to cover roughly six million acres in panels by 2050.
The default approach is turfgrass, gravel, or herbicide-maintained bare ground,
which is ecologically dead.
The Argonne study shows the alternative isn't more expensive or harder to maintain.
It's just a different seed mix.

Photo taken during twilight of the moon rising. I stood in such a way as to create a perspective that made it appear like the moon was balanced on the arm of the utility pole. It is a full moon and because it is low on the horizon, it has a soft orange hue to it and the craters are visible as gray areas. This was a hard shot to get because I was doing it handheld with a 600mm telephoto lens.

Beautiful halo around the sun today. These are also known as 22° halos. This is created by light reflecting off of ice crystals in the atmosphere. #halo #sun #weather #wx

Photo taken in the evening while I was putting up a holiday tree and decorating it. My hand is visible in the forefront, adjusting the star on top of the tree, and immediately behind that is my gray and white cat, peering through the stair spindles, and he is very happily watching me decorate the tree and make adjustments. He’s lit by the multicolored light strings and his whiskers are pushed forward in excitement, as he stretches towards me. His little nose is so pink and his head is tilted in curiosity as he observes.

Some bluebirds made a surprise visit to the birdbath and had themselves a good splash, though not without some arguing about who was allowed in the water. #birds #birding #nature #photography

Three bluebirds are in a concrete bird bath. There are two male bluebirds on the edge of the birdbath, their feathers are bright blue on their heads, backs and tail feathers and their bellies are white with some rust colors. The females have the same colors but are not nearly as vivid, their colors are much more muted. There is a bird in the middle of the bath but it's barely visible amongst all of the water it is splashing around.

Two bluebirds are in a bird bath but it's hard to make out two because one of them is splashing so much water everywhere that it obscures itself. A second bluebird is making it's move towards the water.

A bluebird is splashing in the water in the birdbath and its beak is open because it was really letting the other two birds know that it wanted the water all to itself.

A male bluebird is on the edge of the birdbath and it has twisted its head way around so it can keep an eye on the sky. There might have been a red-tailed hawk or a turkey vulture flying over, they are also frequent visitors to this area.
