“Pillars of Society” by George Grosz (1926), skewering politicians, the press, clergy, courts, and the military in Germany’s Weimar Republic.

At Mia in Minneapolis: “In the aftermath of war and revolution, George Grosz became a fierce social critic, satirizing the military, the church, and the capitalist establishment of the Weimar Republic. His 1926 Pillars of Society is one of his masterpieces. In it, representatives of the press and politics, the church and the military, are gathered. Lifting the skulls of these state representatives, Grosz exposed "the elite of humanity as de facto pigs," as playwright Bertolt Brecht saw it. Front and center is a judge, with scar and swastika, obsessed with fantasies from his time as a cavalryman. At left, a publisher holds a palm of peace, but it is stained with blood; he wears a chamber pot as a hat. Beside him, the excremental brain of a member of parliament is literally steaming. The grinning chaplain preaches peace and covers up the crimes of the military behind him. Such biting caricatures made Grosz a target of the Nazis; violently opposed to their politics and tactics, he left Germany for the United States before they came to power in 1933.”

The laziest trope and still used way too often in this year of 2026

"Women in refrigerators" is a term coined by Gail Simone in 1999 to describe a literary trope which involves female characters facing disproportionate harm, such as maiming, assault, or even death, to serve as plot devices to motivate male characters, an event colloquially known as "fridging".

Nuanced and intriguing, this is a complex story of power, ambition and obsession.
Named for the character in Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, Marie Danvers, Danny to her friends, is a streetwise grifter, with an ambiguous history. She inserts herself into the lives of the wealthy as housekeeper to await an opportunity for exploitation.
She seems to find herself drawn in deeper with the rebellious bride-to-be Calista, before finding herself in LA caught in a storm of power, lust and obsession while working for Bebe Patten.
There's a simmering tension that underlies the entire book, suspense as you're not quite sure what is going to happen next.
The literary nods to Rebecca throughout are a clever way to interweave the two separate narratives, though you don't need to have read Du Maurier's work to sink into this story. The power imbalance and co-dependency between Danny and Bebe was intriguing to see unfold, and made for interesting interactions. Their dynamic is never cut and dry and it makes for a twisting read. Danny is an intriguing, brilliantly crafted main character that could inspire a great deal of discussion. Is she unreliable? Is she out for personal gain only or does she fall into an obsession with her marks against her objectives? This makes I Am Danvers a multi-layered read that has all the sinister, toxic power of a good suspense.
