The Mediterranean is getting warmer, and marine heatwaves are a defining feature of that change. In 2024, it recorded its highest number of MHW days in two decades. Mean SSTs reached 1.23°C above the 1982–2024 baseline, rising at 0.32 ± 0.01°C per decade. eu-space.europa.eu/components/e...

I often see people claim that because clean energy sources like solar, wind, or nuclear are manufactured using fossil fuels their emissions are high. But thats absolutely not the case: even accounting for full lifecycle emissions they are vastly better than burning coal or gas:

About damn time. Human-made climate change should be treated as an emergency, and be at the top of everyone's worry and every party's policy plan. Whatever issue we can think of (economy, war, immigration,...), climate change is making it worse. We can win this battle, but we must want to.

When the dream of a "never-ending summer" turns to nightmare. Heatwaves increasingly occur outside traditional summer months. Heat early warning systems and cooling centres will become more and more a necessity, plus stopping burning fossil fuels obviously.

8 years ago, I tweeted side-by-side maps from NASA GISS showing global temperatures in 1976 and 2018 – both hot summers in the UK. It subsequently went viral and was printed in the Daily Mail! The 2026 version is stark. Two locally extreme summers separated by 50 years of global climate change.

The UN Climate Loss and Damage was set up at COP27 in 2022. It was created to help emerging economies to cope with the increase of extreme weather events caused by human-made climate change, to which they contributed almost nothing, like in Nepal last week. Via @drilledmedia.bsky.social

It's been in the air for a while, yet is quite impactful to read it on paper. We didn't manage to keep the long-term increase in global temperature below the 1.5C threshold. Now we must act fast to keep it below 2C degree and limit the overshoot. "Every fraction of a degree makes things worse."

Great study about the dangerous gamble of going above the 1.5C threshold. Even when nature has the potential to recover, human communities sometimes cannot. Further evidence that we should avoid overshooting crucial global and local temperature thresholds as much as we can.

The AMOC is a key piece of the Earth system, and climate change is threatening it. Turns out that the rate of CO2 change affects the AMOC possibly even more than temperature. At our current rate, the AMOC might collapse sooner than we thought. Remember "flatten the curve"? That's what we must do.

If energy policymakers consider all relevant costs in their policy decisions — including health costs (expenses plus avoidable deaths and ill health) — I'm confident they will conclude that clean energy (solar, wind, geothermal, storage, etc.) is the best path forward for their nation.
