Universities should permit ambitious, legitimate use of generative AI while requiring every student who passes every course to demonstrate the competence that course certifies. A protected live, individual and adaptive exchange with a human assessor would provide evidence about the person that an AI-assisted product alone cannot supply.

Without strong standards and smart oversight, artificial intelligence risks eroding the foundations of higher education.
