Such a disappointment! Today, the Scottish Government published its Rural Support Plan for the next five years. It was supposed to set out future support to help farming become more sustainable. Instead, it’s stuck in the past. Scotland’s nature, farmers, crofters and communities deserve better! 👇
Blue tile with blue and green chevron banner across the top. The words are a quote from the Director of RSPB Scotland, Anne McCall, saying “We are so disappointed in the Rural Support Plan. Scotland’s farmers and crofters deserve better.
They’re being asked to produce food as well as help tackle the nature and climate crisis while the farm payment budget shrinks in real terms.
With a static budget, every pound must work harder to deliver positive outcomes. Instead, this plan signals a continuation of the status quo. Some funding will move into measures that directly support nature and climate action, but not until 2030. However welcome this is, it is too little, too late.
We support the government’s vision for Scotland to become a world leader in sustainable and regenerative agriculture. But this plan is holding us back. It will fail to help farmers and crofters develop more resilient businesses in the face of climate change and nature loss and fail to support meaningful action to address those issues”.

It’s been 6 months since the report on Coul Links went to ministers for them to decide its fate. Many thousands of people have spoken out to protect this unique and beautiful place from the irreparable damage the proposed golf development would do. 🦆🪰 🦋 Today we sent a letter to ministers 👇
Minister for Public Finance
cc. Cabinet Secretary for Climate Action and Energy

10 March 2026

Save Coul Links – Six months since Reporters’ Recommendations sent to Scottish Government

The Conservation Coalition, made up of Buglife Scotland, Butterfly Conservation, Marine Conservation Society, National Trust for Scotland, Plantlife Scotland, RSPB Scotland and Scottish Wildlife Trust, is again writing to you in your role as minister with responsibility for planning. We appreciate your response to our last letter in November 2025 in relation to the proposed golf course at Coul Links.

It is now over six months since the Reporters’ recommendations on Coul Links was passed to Ministers to decide the outcome. Tens of thousands of people have voiced their concerns about this development which would cause unacceptable harm to a unique and beautiful place for nature. The proposed development would do irreparable damage to the Dornoch Firth and Loch Fleet Ramsar site, a rare coastal sand dune habitat of international importance, as well as to a Special Protection Area (SPA) and the Loch Fleet Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). NatureScot has also objected due to the predicted damage to the protected habitats found at Coul Links. All developments should be well-sited and designed to avoid the most sensitive places for wildlife and ensure that they leave nature in a better state than before, in line with the ambition and policies of the National Planning Framework and to contribute to Scotland’s nature recovery.

We were delighted that the Scottish Parliament recently decided to agree to give enhanced protection to Ramsar sites in the Natural Environment Bill. While this additional legal protection will not come into force immediately, we hope that the Scottish Government will show that they are consistent in working towards the protection and restoration of nature in Scotland and refuse this harmful application.

Yours Sincerely,
The Conservation Coalition

Today’s report from the Climate Change Committee backs up what we’ve been saying to the Scottish Government. The Climate Change Plan is not good enough. Scotland needs bolder action to reach our climate targets. Read the report 👉 www.theccc.org.uk/publication/...
A blue tile with a blue and green chevron banner along the top. The words are a quote and read: "The climate and nature crisis demands urgent action. Fortunately, nature offers many solutions. Restoring Scotland’s peatlands and planting trees have a vital role to play in tackling climate change by locking away carbon. But this new report shows the Scottish Government’s current plans don’t match the level of ambition needed to reach Net Zero by 2045. Especially when it comes to supporting the reduction of greenhouse emissions from agriculture. The next Scottish Government must develop a clearer and more joined up plan; one that makes the most of nature-based solutions. The next Land Use Strategy must set out the changes needed to reduce emissions. And, the upcoming Rural Support Plan must provide better support for farmers and crofters to produce food while taking action for climate and nature. If we get this right, we can grow a greener, healthier and more secure future for Scotland for generations to come."

The UK Government’s decision to include Berwick Bank in the Contracts for Difference scheme is a disaster for Scotland’s seabirds. Killing tens of thousands of these incredible birds isn’t just reckless, it could push many species towards extinction.
Text that states:

“Including the proposed Berwick Bank offshore windfarm in the Contracts for Difference scheme is a crushing blow for marine wildlife in Scotland and beyond. When 62% of seabird species are in decline across the UK, it is an absolute disgrace that public money will be used to support what is predicted to be one of the world’s most damaging windfarms for birds.

"A development that will kill will tens of thousands of seabirds over its lifetime and push species like Kittiwakes and Puffins closer to extinction in Scotland is unsupportable on every level.

"What’s more, measures needed to try and compensate for the impact of Berwick Bank would need to be so great this one windfarm could effectively block the progress of other less harmful projects.

We have resigned from the Scottish Government’s farming policy group having lost all confidence in the process. Farming is key to tackling the nature and climate crisis. Many farmers and crofters want to do more but the current system is failing them. Full statement 👇
Text which reads:

We’ve made the difficult decision to walk away from groups set up to help shape Scottish farming policy.

For four years, alongside LINK, we’ve tried to engage constructively and help the government achieve their sustainable farming goals. But we can no longer participate in a process we’ve no confidence in.

The process is meant to be co-designing policy, but there’s no clarity about the aims or timeline, key evidence doesn’t seem to influence decisions, and repeated requests to improve things have gone unheeded.

Farming has an essential role to play in tackling the nature and climate crisis. Yet of the £650M of public funding spent on agriculture each year, just 5% directly supports nature and climate friendly farming. Many farmers and crofters want to do more but the current system — and the process meant to reform it — is letting them down.

We are still keen to help make the much-needed changes and urge the next government to start afresh.

Campaigners dressed as a Wildcat, a Puffin, a Bumblebee and a Squirrel hold signs outside the Scottish Parliament which read: "Protect our Home" and "Nature Targets Now"The Natural Environment Bill: is it a trick or a treat for nature?

Yesterday MSPs debated the Bill in Parliament. It was great to hear so many MSPs talking passionately about nature and supporting the introduction of ambitious, legally-binding nature restoration targets.

These targets are key. They could help us move beyond simply minimising damage to nature to actually reversing the decline of species and habitats across Scotland.

But there’s a big problem. Part 2 of the Bill threatens to weaken our most important wildlife protections. There should be no place for this in a Bill that aims to restore nature.

The Natural Environment Bill is a once-in-a-generation chance to turn things around for Scotland’s nature, but we must get the detail right.
