David: But then I felt when watching it [the rhino horn scene], I felt it was also subservient because the boss is yelling at him and he's scared of the boss. Watching it, I felt like we know Blackbeard is fucked up, he just murdered a bunch of people on the boat. We don't need another reminder that he's really fucked up. And Izzy's just like "Fuck, this guy fucking sucks it's scary." I don't think he was scary enough to warrant..what he was doing in that scene wasn't interesting enough - we just saw him murder a bunch of people at a wedding. And then he's like "Actually I'm more fucked up!" At the end of that episode he shoots you and then the next episode he's maybe going to kill himself in front of you and it's like this is too much of this.
Con: I mean who hasn't had that happen to them? [laughter]
David: Watching the edit, I was like I'm bored. If I'm watching the edit, and I'm just like no - the scene gets dropped. It doesn't happen often but it happened in the second season because we were writing more quickly than I would have liked. When you're writing more quickly then shit hits the table for actors for the table read that should never hit the table read. Because I feel like if a scene hits the table read and you cut it from the shooting script, the actor goes, " fucked up."
Con: And we do, mostly.
David: Why would you not? If I were in that position. And then there are things in my job where I'm like " fucked up.
They canceled my show, I fucked up." It's not about that.
Con: It's not, absolutely.
David: But we want to do well for each other, we want to win, we're scared.
