Soaking in hot springs (onsen) holds a central position in Japanese cultural life and wellness heritage, rooted in ancient Shinto traditions of ritual purification (misogi) and the therapeutic practice of tōji (healing bath retreats).
Framed by the dark, angular lines of a gabled timber overhang, an indoor thermal bath (onsen) looks out onto a serene garden radiant with golden autumn maples (momiji). The still, mirror-like surface of the mineral bath water perfectly catches the luminous amber foliage, creating a striking liquid reflection that merges the interior sanctuary with the vibrant autumn landscape. Polished dark stone and warm wood panels line the bathhouse, catching soft reflections of warm ambient light along the pool’s edge. The scene evokes a deeply immersive sensory atmosphere: the soothing warmth of mineral-rich geothermal waters, the subtle aroma of cedar and cypress (hinoki) rising with the steam, the faint whisper of autumn breeze against the glass, and the quiet stillness of an autumn afternoon.
Japanese bathhouses and traditional inns (ryokan) are meticulously engineered to honor kisetsukan—a deep sensitivity to the passing seasons—offering bathers an intimate connection to spring cherry blossoms, summer greens, autumn leaves, or winter snow. Through the architectural technique of shakkei ("borrowed scenery"), master builders frame the surrounding natural landscape into the room's design, blurring the boundary between uchi (inside) and soto (outside). Every detail—from the precision joinery of the timber roof to the seamless stone masonry of the bath—reflects monozukuri (artisanal mastery and devotion to material heritage), transforming a daily ritual into a meditative encounter with nature.

Located in Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture, Genbi-kei Gorge—designated a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument of Japan—stretches for two kilometers along the Iwai River.
Winding through a rugged chasm of water-sculpted stone, the turquoise waters of the Iwai River carve a dramatic path framed by a brilliant autumn canopy. On the right, fiery beech and maple leaves glow in shades of russet, copper, and vermilion, creating a vivid counterpoint to the deep green pines clinging to the dark, mossy rock faces on the left. A soft, silvery mist settles over the distant bend of the ravine, partially shrouding a narrow suspension bridge in atmospheric haze. The scene evokes a vivid sensory atmosphere: the cool, sharp autumn air of Iwate Prefecture, the roaring spray of rushing white water, the earthy scent of damp basalt and fallen leaves, and the quiet reverence of a secluded mountain gorge.
Carved out over millennia through the erosion of volcanic tuff, the ravine is celebrated for its dramatic rock formations, cascading rapids, and unusual cylindrical potholes (ketsugun) worn smooth by tumbling pebbles. Historically, the gorge was admired by Date Masamune, the legendary warlord and founder of the Sendai Domain, who praised its raw, untamed beauty as equal to the famed pine-clad islands of Matsushima. Beyond its dramatic geography, Genbi-kei is famous for its delightful local heritage, including flying dango (Kakko Dango), where teahouse orders of fresh rice dumplings and green tea are sent gliding across the canyon to visitors in a wooden basket suspended on a cable high above the water.

Yabusame’ mounted archery, an old warrior tradition in Japan
Frozen in mid-gallop against a soft blur of dust and greenery, a Yabusame archer rises with fluid grace from the saddle of a white charger, drawing a towering asymmetrical longbow (yumi) with absolute focus. Clad in traditional Kamakura-period hunting attire (hitatare) patterned in vibrant emerald green and gold brocade, the marksman wears spotted deer-hide chaps (mukabaki) and a wide, black-rimmed hat (igasa) secured beneath the chin. A blunt, turnip-headed wooden arrow (kabura-ya) rests aligned with his steady gaze, held at full draw as horse and rider thunder down the course. The contrast between the muscular power of the white horse, the crisp geometric line of the drawn string, and the fluttering patterned sleeves creates a high-stakes sensory moment: the thundering beat of hooves, the rushing wind, and the held breath before the release.
abusame (流鏑馬) is an ancient Japanese ritual of mounted archery dating back to the late Heian and early Kamakura periods (12th century), codified under Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo to cultivate samurai discipline, mental focus, and spiritual devotion. Performed as a sacred rite at Shinto shrines, the archer must shoot three wooden targets in rapid succession while galloping down a narrow, two-hundred-meter track. The arrow's bulbous wooden tip—known as a whistle-arrow—produces a high-pitched hum as it cuts through the air, signaling a prayer for peace and driving away evil spirits. The creation of the archer's specialized gear, from the laminated bamboo bow and eagle-feather arrows to hand-woven silk brocades and custom leatherwork, represents a living continuum of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and material craft), where feudal military tradition is preserved as sacred performance art.

Located in the Taihaku Ward of Sendai, Japan, Akiu Great Falls is widely celebrated as one of Japan’s most majestic waterfalls and a designated Place of Scenic Beauty.
Framed by a delicate arbor of snow-draped branches glowing with cool indigo light, Akiu Great Falls (Akiu Ōtaki) cascades through a frozen gorge in Sendai's mountainous western rim. Heavy winter frost encases every twig and bough in pristine white yukisheshō ("snow makeup"), forming a crystalline lattice over the dark basalt cliffs. Below, the churning waters of the Natori River plunge into a deep, shadowed basin, captured in a silky, luminous blur that contrasts against the static, frozen landscape. The scene evokes an intimate winter sensory atmosphere: the biting, clear mountain air of Miyagi Prefecture, the muffled roar of rushing water echoing within the snow-insulated canyon, the clean scent of frozen hemlock and wet stone, and the deep stillness that settles over the valley during a heavy snowfall.
Plummeting 55 meters into the river canyon below, the falls serve as the natural crowning jewel of the Akiu region, famous for its historic hot springs (Akiu Onsen) which have drawn visitors—including the legendary feudal warlord Date Masamune—for over fifteen centuries. This wilderness landscape embodies Sendai’s enduring identity as Mori no Miyako ("The City of Trees"), where refined culture seamlessly yields to untamed forests and rugged mountain gorges.

Japanese graffiti ,Shibuya, Tokyo
Painted directly onto a textured, off-white stucco exterior wall, this urban mural blurs the boundary between traditional decorative painting and contemporary street art. At its center, a painted vertical hanging scroll (kakejiku) rendered in ochre and earth tones displays a delicate study of crimson plum blossoms (koubai). In a clever trompe-l'œil illusion, gnarled plum branches burst outward beyond the scroll's visual borders, trailing pale pink blooms across the rough plaster. To the left, a modern outdoor water heater—bearing a swift, black marker tag—and exposed utility piping create a sharp, tactile contrast against the organic elegance of the painted flora. The scene evokes a distinct urban sensory atmosphere: the cool air of a Shibuya backstreet, the coarse grain of weathered stucco, and the quiet surprise of encountering seasonal beauty mounted beside industrial utility.
Situated within the alleyways of Shibuya, this piece exemplifies Tokyo's evolving street art landscape, where classical Japanese artistic motifs (kachō-ga, or flower-and-bird genre painting) are recontextualized on concrete and plaster. Traditionally, the kakejiku was displayed inside a home's tokonoma (display alcove) to mark seasonal transitions; here, the mural democratizes the alcove, bringing seasonal contemplation out into the public sphere. The plum blossom (ume) holds deep historical significance as the first flower to bloom amidst late-winter cold, symbolizing endurance, courage, and spiritual renewal.

Fûten, the Wind Deity 十二天像 風天図 Hanabusa Itchô late 17th–early 18th century MEDIUM/TECHNIQUEHanging scroll; ink, color, and gold on paper DIMENSIONS90.2 x 37.4 cm (35 ½ x 14 ¾ in.) (height x width) CREDIT LINEWilliam Sturgis Bigelow Collection
Standing resolute upon a floating oval cloud pedestal, Fûten—the Esoteric Buddhist deity of the wind—confronts an unseen gale, his white hair and beard blowing wildly across his stern, weathered face. He firmly grasps a long wooden staff crowned with a luminous sacred jewel (hōju), from which a bifurcated white banner whipped by wind spirals into the upper air. He is clad in intricate armor beneath richly patterned robes of vermilion, gold, and deep indigo, swathed in fluid celestial scarves (tenne) that loop and undulate around his frame like swirling air currents. Set against an unadorned, pale silk ground, the high-contrast mineral pigments and calligraphic line-work translate the raw, invisible kinetic energy of a tempest into a vivid visual experience, echoing the rustle of silk and the howling of mountain winds.
Executed in the late 17th or early 18th century by the celebrated Edo-period master Hanabusa Itchō (1652–1724), this hanging scroll depicts Fûten (Vāyu), the guardian of the northwest among the Jūnitai (Twelve Devas) of Esoteric Buddhism. Trained in the Kanō school before developing his own lively, genre-infused style, Itchō brought a fresh, human vitality and fluid movement to traditional Buddhist iconography. Fûten's role as the controller of winds and purifier of atmospheric defilement reflects the syncretic spiritual landscape of Edo Japan.

Misty path to Dewa Sanzan temples, Japan (Photography by Ah Bee Panda).
Ascending through a dense cathedral of ancient, towering Japanese cedars (sugi), a moss-carpeted stone staircase (ishidan) carves a dark, deliberate path into the veil of a mountain mist. The lower foreground is grounded by deep, ink-like tones of wet slate and weathered bark, where ferns and emerald moss cling to centuries-old roots. Above, a heavy, luminous fog softens the canopy, partially dissolving the distant forest and the silhouetted eaves of hidden shrine architecture into an ethereal, monochromatic haze. The high-contrast interplay between the damp, dark stones below and the pale, misty void above creates an immersive sensory landscape filled with the quiet aroma of damp pine, damp earth, and cool mountain air.
Photographed by Ah Bee Panda, this composition captures the sacred approach (sandō) of Mount Haguro, one of the revered Dewa Sanzan (Three Mountains of Dewa) nestled in Yamagata Prefecture. Comprising 2,446 hand-laid stone steps lined by over five hundred ancient cedars, this trail has served for over a millennium as a pilgrimage route for practitioners of Shugendō—a syncretic tradition combining Shinto nature worship, Esoteric Buddhism, and mountain asceticism. Within Shugendō cosmology, traversing the Dewa Sanzan represents a symbolic journey of spiritual death and rebirth, with Mount Haguro representing the present physical life. The meticulous construction of these stone stairs and the preservation of the sacred grove demonstrate a profound environmental monozukuri (artisanal mastery in sacred design), where human devotion is sculpted into permanent, harmonious dialogue with the living forest.

Twin trees spotted near Kinkakuji temple, Kyoto, Japan. Photography by Jane Heather on 500px
Rising from a dense sea of foliage, two remarkably slender Japanese cedars (sugi) stand in striking, parallel alignment near Kyoto's Kinkakuji temple. Their straight, pale boles stretch upward through the canopy, stripped of lower limbs until crowning into lush, compact clusters of deep green needles. Around them, an undulating ocean of broadleaf maples and evergreens forms a rich, textured backdrop, where bright emerald leaves catch the sunlight while deep, shadowed pockets pool below near the forest floor. The sheer verticality of the twin trunks cuts through the soft, organic chaos of the surrounding forest, creating an arresting focal point of quiet natural balance.
Captured by photographer Jane Heather, this image touches upon the unique arboreal heritage of Kyoto's northern hills, home to the celebrated Kitayama sugi (Kitayama cedar) forestry tradition. Originating during the Muromachi period—the very era in which Kinkakuji was constructed as Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu's retirement villa—the cultivated growth of these straight, knot-free cedar poles became foundational to Japanese interior design. These slender logs were meticulously nurtured for use as tokobashira (main alcove pillars) within sukiya-zukuri (tearoom-style) architecture, where the unadorned beauty of natural timber was deeply prized. This ancient silvicultural monozukuri (artisanal craft) represents a harmonious partnership between human stewardship and nature, shaping living timber to embody structural elegance and spiritual restraint.
