Happy to announce that I have started as a senior postdoctoral researcher at @uantwerpen.be, where I will work on a new project, funded by the @fwovlaanderen.bsky.social, on how cognition and brain anatomy of reptiles and amphibians change throughout biological invasions 🧠 🦎 🐸. Stay tuned!

At #ISBE2026 and interested in lizards (who isn't?), #cognition, and how these are impacted by an invasive predator? Come see my talk on Wednesday, in the Cognition session (8H) or otherwise happy to have a chat

Dispersing individuals are often characterized by specific traits, known as 'dispersal syndromes'. But how do cognition and relative🧠size fit within this? Are 'big-brained' individuals more or less eager to disperse? You can read the answer in our recent publication: doi.org/10.1002/oik....

New 🐟🧠 paper led by Olivia Carmstedt (not on Bluesky): Streaming for Fish. To understand how reciprocal social interactions affect brain development, we exposed guppies to either live conspecifics or video-recordings of fish. royalsocietypublishing.org/rsbl/article...

Streaming for fish? Screen-based social exposure disrupts brain development
Abstract. Social interactions form key developmental cues for plasticity in the vertebrate brain. However, few experimental studies disentangle specific as

Last week I had the pleasure of giving a guest-lecture to Msc students at Antwerp University about what reptiles can teach us about the evolution of cognition, and the research at @creaf.cat on the role of behaviour & cognition in biological invasions. Thanks @uafunmorph.bsky.social for inviting me!

New🐟🧠 paper! To better understand what aspects of group-living are cognitively demanding, we tested whether individual recognition depends on relative brain size in guppies. Spoilers: guppies recognized and preferred familiar fish, regardless of brain size! link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Individual recognition in guppies does not require large brains - Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology
Abstract It is often assumed that group-living animals require larger brains in order to deal with the various social challenges they encounter. One such key challenge is the need to recognize and dis...

We studied lizards from 12 Croatian islands and found substantial variation in their chemical signal profiles. Ecological factors didn’t explain it. Instead, divergence was best explained by non-adaptive processes 🦎🏝️ @oikosjournal.bsky.social nsojournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

First 🐟 paper published with @annikaboussard.bsky.social ! Guppies artificially selected for a larger telencephalon, relative the the rest of the brain, perform better in both an allo- and egocentric spatial learning task. doi.org/10.1242/jeb....

Evolutionary changes in telencephalon size affect both egocentric and allocentric spatial learning in guppies
Summary: An artificial selection experiment on guppies shows that enlargement of the telencephalon, relative to the rest of the brain, enhances performance in two distinct spatial learning strategies.
