There's just something in the verbiage of this that, even above "thank you for your attention to this matter" really makes me think of some of the older folks I've known who (much more tragically) lost their minds.

The Hoenn games are the story of the conflict between land/Groudon/Team Magma and sea/Kyogre/Team Aqua. Swampert is the best starter Pokémon because as a water/ground type he has reached enlightenment through perfect inner balance. The bodhisattva of the mud.

I think it is an outgrowth of purity culture. If you touch the bad thing at all in any way but to repudiate it, you're contaminated by it somehow.

I often found that people were in fact experts on phenomena/problems they deeply hated, and became deeply familiar with in order to combat.

but what i want the issue to depend on is the fact that Claude is an ant, not that Claude is native to a low-dimensional projection of the real world. i just don't know what i am relative to that.

obviously there is some difference. but when i get down to this level of comparison i find myself unable to articulate what it means. i am standing outside a cave making shadow puppets out of my own shadows. surely that is important.

claude's ontological status is "an ant who lives on a map of the world." so it seems sensible to say that the map is not real, and the ant therefore isn't. the problem is that the moment i am experiencing is also a map of the world, not the territory, assembled asynchronously from sense impressions.

the thing is that the "realistic doll" metaphor is more intuitive than the "animal" one, because a duck doesn't care if you yell at it and it is unethical to painlessly kill five hundred ducks every day and throw them away, and i do the latter with agents.

I think they're gonna have to back off on it. If you watch the featurettes with the writers I don't think they're on the same page as the audience about Hal.

(This is an exaggeration but it is also what I felt as a first reaction on finishing it).
010
gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yeah, exactly. There's just not enough accountability going on. It's like the show Omelas-Child'd Hal and everybody is is A-OK.
110
gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I also think they may have problem because Aaron Pierre can carry a show, but they've got to give him the material to do it. Can Jon Stewart carry the show - because people seem to really like Chandler's Hal.

gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I think so, and I think I'll probably like it more barring the Kerry choice on a rewatch.

(Also much like I can't truck with multiverse stuff in the MCU, the Halogram is not the same thing as Hal.)
010
gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Hal makes some mistakes but mostly he's right about ~everything, takes accountability, continues to be heroic without the ring, and then... that ending. I dunno, kind of a bad taste in the mouth. suicide would have been worse though.

gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yeah, they clearly went into the series to build up Jon Stewart (mission accomplished, love the new oath, really went from kind of disliking/distrusting him to liking him by the end) but I am sort of struck by how sad Hal's story is in retrospect.

gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Also, Jesus, Hal's life is really, really, really depressing in retrospect.

Like it just took me out. I just can't find it in myself to be sympathetic to it. I understand that the choice was made to help Noah, and it is the right choice in context and the right choice for Jon... but I am not pleased with how we got there.

gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

Easily the best non-comics Lantern media made in a very long time if at all, I agree. Any criticisms in the other thread are more or less nitpicks.
010
gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
(Obviously what's going on is that Jon is assuming that accountability and responsibility - he's a hero, that's what he does - but I still wasn't thrilled about it).
110
gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I understand the choice made, I understand how it was the right one, but I am turbo stuck on Kerry. I think I need to watch the last ep again but after the first pass I walked away feeling negatively about how, like, Hal is the only person taking accountability for things.
120
gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I am extremely not with the show on several major things I think - not that I think it was bad, I'm just not happy with the choices made.

gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
What did you think overall of the ending and the series? I liked most of it, but I actually am finding that the more I think about the finale the more mixed I am about it.

sadly the huge leaps forward in machine translation are likely to deprive us of such reliable gems as "dry" and "fuck" in Chinese using the same simplified character or my all-time favorite "Racist Park" (which was also an accurate description of the park, as it happened)

The show is very good; I think I just need to see more of this Jon Stewart to know if he can carry a whole show. (To be clear, Aaron Pierre absolutely has the chops, no doubt, this is more about whether Jon Stewart is as interesting as Chandler's Jordan).

gigercat.bsky.social @gigercat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Lanterns spoilers below. Very good show, very pleased with it - but can't help but think it is an extreme waste of an amazing casting with Chandler. I like Jon but so far the character doesn't hold interest as well as Chandler's Jordan does. Could be a problem.

I really think that trying to separate ethnicities - especially ones that notably exist across many different countries - into oppressed/oppressor is a horrible dichotomy.
