Subtle is relative, if you're a demon.
Lavender lifted her hands up, laughing. “I’m still trying to learn how to make change subtly as a demon.”

Audrey waved a hand dismissively. “The only people who think you can’t solve problems by stomping them flat are people who are…” She stomped a paw down. “Problems.”

The squirrel grinned. “You’re kind of terrifying.”

“You’re so sweet.” Audrey blew her a kiss.

I'm not sure what kind of orientation they give new demons, but I bet it's interesting
“I know we covered summoning in your orientation, but nothing will quite prepare you, and it’s...indescribably unpleasant to find yourself forced to commit heinous acts against your will.” Theli looked distant. “Ironic, given how indescribably /pleasant/ committing heinous acts can be otherwise, isn’t it.”

If you hire a professional rampager, you better read the fine print
“Look, Miss Saffron, I know your M.O. is giving your targets advance warning and that’s commendable, but this is a rescue mission. If you let them know you’re coming, it all falls apart.”

“One, that doesn’t change my rules, and two, as I’ve been trying to get across to you, you do not contract a mercenary known for high levels of collateral damage for a rescue mission.”

His ears lowered. “I thought that was, uh, anti-Heavy Forces propaganda.”

“It’s exaggerated, because it’s in the best interest of groups I might be deployed against to convince you not to hire me. But exaggerated doesn’t mean false. I tend to fuck up a lot of the surrounding area, sometimes because it’s to my tactical advantage, sometimes because I can’t avoid it, occasionally just because breaking shit is fun.”

Bob, her ship’s AI, added, “Mostly the latter.” She gave the ceiling speaker a shushing glare.

This, for the record, is a Cuban sandwich. Yes, it's Swiss cheese, roast pork, and ham (and in most places in Tampa, salami), but it's pressed…and on CUBAN BREAD. That one in that photograph has bread so wrong it'd be like getting a Philly cheesesteak on toasted ciabatta.

When I shared some of "The Turning" draft, one reader got super huffy at Hazel's intro—the first thing she does with her powers is eat someone really annoying. "How can you expect anyone to like someone who'd do that?" he huffed. And I said nothing, but thought, oh, you sweet summer child. #VoreDay

"Great." The coyote picked up her own spoon. "Now dig in. I think there's enough to share."

"Ha ha." Dig in? How? The bowl's sides were almost as tall as she was. She couldn't reach the ice cream without *ohhhhh. She's not going to drop me in the bowl, she's trying to get me to climb into the bowl on my own.*

With "Big Trouble" now out, I have four books—noir mystery, period romance, modern magical school lesbian/trans romance, and epic modern fantasy with sharp-edged politics! Descriptions and ordering links: giants-club.net/books/

It continues to be too amusing to me to find opportunities to get just a little meta in a story
“Are you watching that maned wolf’s butt?”

She looked up at Ray, her ears coloring. “I—uh—maybe a little?”

The coyote smirked. “You’re a macrophile.”

“A what?”

“A little who’s attracted to giants.”

“I’m—uh…” She rubbed the back of one of her long ears. “Maybe, but if I am, it’s mostly your fault.”

“No, I just woke something in you that was already there. You’re welcome.”

Seeing some discourse about authors claiming their work "contains no politics". I mean, it's possible some of my stuff gets a little political
Rhiannon shifts uncomfortably. “You’re really committed to the idea of being a goddess, aren’t you?”

“You’ve seen Hazel do miracles, and frankly, she doesn’t know a fraction of what she’s capable of. I’m going to guess there’ve been worshippers here. And you _know_ this is all supernatural, impossible. You can rationalize superheroes, but not gods?”

“I don’t know what the hell I can rationalize. All I know is that ever since you did whatever you did, I’ve had a supporting role in a crazy dark comedy and I can’t figure out if my roommate’s the plucky heroine or a cosmic horror. So thanks for that.” She looks down at the floor. “You want to know why no gods? Because if there were gods, it’d mean they _let_ the world get this way. There’s so much beauty and so much ugliness. Maybe you can’t have one without the other. But through all my short, mortal life, the balance has been tipping. There’s always been corruption, but it’s getting more open. Our leaders call laws against discrimination the _real_ discrimination, the anti-fascists the _real_ fascists. There are too many places I might get arrested—or worse—for just using a public restroom.”

She takes a ragged breath, and looks up, glaring at the hare. “So no, I can’t explain what Hazel can do now, or what I guess you and the sheep can do. But as insane as it is to believe you’re superheroes? If I believe that you’re a goddess, and you’ve been here a thousand years just watching? That you didn’t help us? That you didn’t _stop_ us?” Her words drop to a broken whisper. “That’s so much worse.”

Don't concern the neighbors! #amwriting #FurryLit
“Miss Bancroft, we can’t just go in her house.”

“Oh, we can. Unless she has a deadbolt, it’s quite easy.” She reached into her handbag and pulled out something I couldn’t make out, and started poking at the keyhole with it.

“You know full well I mean we shouldn’t. What do you have there?”

She tried the doorknob again, and the door swung open.

“Was—was that a lock pick set? Do you know how to pick locks?”

Walking inside, the vixen waved me to follow. “Every girl should, don’t you think?”

I lowered my voice, glancing around nervously. “No, I rather don’t!”

“Try not to look like you’re breaking and entering, Mr. Hornsby. It might concern the neighbors.”

TIL that San Francisco's Coit Tower is named for a genderqueer socialite of the late 1800s.
Although Martha had done her best to turn her daughter into a traditional southern belle, Lillie continued to be contemptuous of conformity. She has been described as one of the most eccentric personalities of her time. She once arranged a middleweight boxing match in her hotel room. A New York newspaper reported the incident:

"Mrs. Lillie Coit has broken through another social tradition by having a slugging match in her drawing room. Blood flowed freely. The winning Sighter asked her if he should finish off his opponent and she turned her thumbs down. Has the wealthy woman set an example, which other women will follow? This is a staggering shock to conservative New York. But but did not ruffle San Francisco one bit. They are used to her.”

Lillie Coit played poker, smoked cigars, polished off bottles of bourbon and wore trousers long before it was socially acceptable for women to do so. On one occasion, she attended a meeting of San Francisco’s all-male Bohemian Club disguised as a gentleman. Although Coit was the originator of a new way of life for women, San Francisco society accepted her and her oddities. “This was because she was so picturesque that she was able to violate the many norms of behavior without suffering a loss of reputation,” wrote a Boston Globe reporter.

Me: This setting has mixed sizes, but it's Zootopia-esque, nothing really racy about it Also me: Yyyyyyyyyeah but—
“Isn’t it lovely? There’s no other neighborhood in the city where it’s so easy to share space with all the other kinds of animals.”

“I, ah, I see that.” I looked across the street at a nightclub I could only refer to as /imposing,/ a word I wouldn’t normally associate with such an establishment. But the largest of its three front doors rolled up rather than opened inward, and it stood a good four times my height. /Sliding Scale Burlesque Club,/ the sign read. “That’s a mixed-size, ah, gentlemen’s club?”

“Open to all sexes. Lovely dancers on multiple stages, private rooms, strong drinks, and a better kitchen than a place like that honestly needs.” She laughed.

“Private...” I felt my ears flush. “For mixed sizes. How can, ah...” I cleared my throat.

Miss Bancroft walked up onto the front stoop of an unmarked building. “You’ll just have to visit some time and find out, Mr. Hornsby.” She unlocked the door and winked.

I’m quite sure the blush in my ears spread to most of the upper half of my body. I hurried inside, barely remembering to hold the door open for her.

Because I cannot let go of this fundamental question about anthropomorphic sharks, I am leaning into it in the story's opening
Leaning forward in her lifeguard chair, Nixie squinted at the two swimmers---if you could call that swimming---about fifty yards out. Was one of them in trouble? Maybe not. She swept her gaze around the rest of the beach, then back at them.

"Why do you have boobs?"

Nixie made a soft choking noise and stared down at the questioner, open-mouthed.
