Somewhat related: this picture of Steinbeck from the 60s wearing a pullover hoodie for some reason always looks really incongruous to me. Even though logically I know that pullover hooded sweatshirts existed in the 60s, it just doesn't feel right to see an older guy wearing one in that era.
A color photo of John Steinbeck, in his later years, wearing a navy blue (I think; I'm slightly color blind) hoodie and smoking a thin cigar.

I don't know why I'm so bad about posting animal pics. I mean, that's the entire point of social media. Anyway, here's a pic my wife took of our dog, Mochi, at the beach yesterday. It was nice and sunny, but since this is Oregon there was also the ever-present frigid wind.
The most adorable dog in the whole wide world. She's black and tan and is standing on a beach looking to her left and panting.

Happy October, fellow Autumn people!
THE OCTOBER COUNTRY …that country where it is always turning late in the year. That country where the hills are fog and the rivers are mist; where noons go quickly, dusks and twilights linger, and midnights stay. That country composed in the main of cellars, sub-cellars, coal-bins, closets, attics, and pantries faced away from the sun. That country whose people are autumn people, thinking only autumn thoughts. Whose people passing at night on the empty walks sound like rain…

-Ray Bradbury, The October Country

There is sooo much going on here. The "fries" in quotation marks, the fact that the menu says "Friend chicken", the knockoff Col. Sanders....

Looks like the Minor Threat sheep to me. Side note: MT's lead singer is named Ian Mackaye. Maybe a distant relative?

This is mis-labelled. It's not a boar, it's evidence that the ancient Romans were Straight Edge. (I wonder if the guy who posted this is a distant relative of Ian)

That old dude from The Simpsons with a long white beard, standing in front of a chalkboard holding a paddle. In the cartoon he said "That's a paddlin'" but I cleverly repurposed the joke by having him say "Brought back measles? That's a shunnin'." It's an incredibly funny joke and you should be very impressed by my wit, even if the humor doesn't come across in Alt Text.

I'm 99% certain that this was taken in Astoria, OR. where much of the movie was filmed. The Liberty Theatre in Astoria was opened in 1925 and went through a restoration in 2005, which is why it looks much less modern today (background still looks pretty much the same):
A google street view screencap of an historic-looking theater on a street corner with blurry-faced dudes walking in front of it.

God this is such an inspiring quote. I want to get this printed on a poster over a picture of a sunset and hang it above my writing desk (well, table really). From @faceyouhate.bsky.social 's new piece on William Gass. billryan64.substack.com/p/your-life-...
If someone asks me, “Why do you write?” I can reply by pointing out that it is a very dumb question. Nevertheless, there is an answer. I write because I hate. A lot. Hard. And if someone asks me the inevitable next question, “Why do you write the way you do?” I must answer that I wish to make my hatred acceptable because my hatred is much of me, if not the best part. Writing is a way of making the writer acceptable to the world — every cheap, dumb, nasty thought, every despicable desire, every noble sentiment, every expensive taste.

Well, this was a vexing interaction. I don't even know what this means, but apparently I'm supposed to assume that the person I'm responding to on bluesky isn't actually on bluesky, but rather some strange 3rd party app that they access through their smart toaster. I am vexed!
Soemone saying :I can’t even read your reply bc you’re not federated/bridged.
and

Why respond, if you’re not federated/bridged and people can’t read the reply unless they’re on blsk?

As you may have noticed, I like to read about some of these on wikipedia, because of my love of all useless trivia. You watched this movie on the 45th anniversary of its American release! What are the odds?! Never Forget Terror Eyes. (Terror Eyes, Terrorists, see, it's all connected!)
The film subsequently premiered in the United States on September 11, 1981, distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Things like that always make me think of Truman Capote/Lionel Twain's rant at the end of Murder By Death:
Lionel Twain: You've tricked and fooled your readers for years. You've tortured us all with surprise endings that made no sense. You've introduced characters in the last five pages that were never in the book before. You've withheld clues and information that made it impossible for us to guess who did it.

I wonder if they killed a a bunch of motorcyclists and took their bikes, or if one of them got a motorcycle first and then convinced all the others that it would cool if they all had bikes. I mean, it's not like they got those from an actual biker gang. Those are dual-sports.
The vampire gang from The Lost Boys, looking very stylish, in a very 80s (and slightly homoerotic) way, on their motorcycles.

Via @racheldeering.bsky.social , this painting is credited to J. Bannon. I searched for a bit and found that it's a lady named Jane Bannon. But, as a @convergecult.bsky.social fan, I was briefly amused by the idea that Jacob Bannon had taken up painting bunnies.
A lovely watercolor painting of a bunny.

Speaking of my slightly obsessive book buying habits. This is a haul from last week that I forgot to post before. The Carroll was from the Goodwill. All the rest are from our local, mazelike used bookstore, where the problem is never finding something I want; it's choosing which ones out of the many
Several paperback books set on top of a closed laptop computer. Outside The Dog Museum by Jonathan Carroll, The Late Lamented by Fredric Brown, A Man Called Spade by Dashiell Hammett, The Lady In The Lake by Raymond Chandler, Black Wings Has My Angel by Elliot Chaze.

It makes me happy to see Davis Grubb on that list. Even though lots of people know of Night of The Hunter now, I suspect that most of them still haven't read the book. Grubb was also a fantastic short story writer. Oh, and Roger Sale was Tim Sale's father? Tim is one of my favorite artists (RIP).

This is fantastic. Maurice Dekobra's "Ten Commandments For Adventuresses" via @neglectedbooks.com
1. Choose an original name — Thea, Belkis, or Mareva.
2. Confide to men under strict secrecy that you are the niece of a revolutionary executed in prison, or the natural daughter of a Balkan king [from Phrygia, for example].
3. Although you may have taken your M.A. at Oxford, speak English with a Russian accent, slightly flavoured with Bulgarian and just a suspicion of Hungarian.
4. Have a favourite flower — a red lily or a Brazilian cowslip — that you won the first time you were kissed on the lips by a Cossack general at the age of sixteen.
5. Introduce anecdotes into your conversation. Remark casually, for example: “‘In summer it is warmer than in winter,’ as the great Lao-Tze has said.”
6. Always live at a hotel. An adventuress has no use for a kitchenette.
7. Wear an antique ring on your little finger — one that used to contain deadly poison and was used by the Florentines in the days of Lucretia Borgia.
8. If you happen to be spending a few days at Margate [surely Dekobra didn’t write Margate in his French original], say to the man who is paying you attention, “My dear, I have just arrived from Stamboul.”
9. Procure a number of leading Continental hotel labels and stick them on your new luggage. An adventuress who does not travel is like a panther without teeth.
10. An adventuress does not eat eggs and bacon for breakfast. She takes snails on toast, six olives, half a pound of caviare, and an aspirin tablet in a glass of absinthe.

Illegal dumping is still a big problem out here, but they usually clean it up eventually. There was, for a time, a trend of people abandoning old RVs in the woods, because you literally can't get rid of those things, even for free. I once found a boat out in the middle of the forest.

I just learned that the Egyptian god Set is represented by a creature known only as the "Set animal" because no one can figure out what animal it's supposed to be. I love them.
A representation of a slender animal with long legs, a long tail pointing up, an elongated snout and ear/horn things that are roughly triangular and flat on top. It's kinda like a greyhound with an aardvark snout and squarish ears. It is weird and majestic.

It just occurred to me that normal people probably don't know about Mortiis. Do you guys know about Mortiis? He started out playing black metal, but transitioned to dungeon synth and he's been wearing troll makeup for thirty years. He basically decided to become Meg Muckelbones. It's so cool.

This is my new favorite movie origin story:
Stewart Raffill says that he was approached by a man who owned theatres in South America who had an animatronic T-Rex which was going to a park in Texas: "The eyes worked. The arms moved. The head moved. He had it for two weeks before it was going to be shipped to Texas and he came to me and said, "We can make a movie with it!" I said, "What's the story?" and he said, "I don't have a story, but we have to start filming within the month!" and so I wrote the story in a week
