Most of the things on my agenda are flagged with "do before humanity extinct". Speaking of which - just got finished with my 4th reading of "Heavy Weather" -- which seems a lot more prescient now that I live in the eastward expansion of Tornado Alley. (uh... North "Dixie Alley")

I'm recommending the July/August 2026 Guest Editorial for "Analog Science Fiction and Fact". Howard V. Hendrix writes on the Kessler Syndrome and humanity's risk of being denied access to LEO. Elon Musk's Starlink, alone, is planning to deploy another 42,000 satellites in the next 7 years!

But AI's have no imagination (their creative leaps sometimes make no sense.) They have no limbic system, so they can say that a person is angry, but can't imagine what someone might do with that anger. Their metaphors and similies don't feel right. We recognize fellow humans for these things.

Reading your "Awkward Incident Transpiring While Exploring the Neighborhood" right now. Looks like a great teaching example for this workshop!

I like the reading list idea. Need to do something like that. Goodreads is too time-consuming.

Well, after a judgement like that you can appeal by getting a new girlfriend, who can bring in her own jury :)

Thanks for including the memorandum opinion in your post -- makes it very clear that DOJ picked the person first and then fished around to find a crime :)

Hmmm... The billionaires that were thinking about moving to New Zealand, South Africa, etc. will now need another plan. Mars...?

Yes, if this were fair, legal and not the result of an end run around both courts and congress. Unfortunately the fund will be administered 5 commissioners, 4 of which are appointed by Trump's Attorney General, which I think is why it will be steered to Jan 6th Trump Loyalists only.

Good luck! Doing that here too. Ditching computer books, engineering books, 35 years of project notebooks, business books. Keeping SciFi, classics, philosophy, history, 3 shelves of dictionaries (reluctantly). Times and needs shifting & that stream of salient moments is accellerating :)

@boriscrito.bsky.social Just read your short story, Schismogenesis. Incredible story - powerful, authorative, & unique! I can't think of anything to compare it to but it reminds me of how I felt when I first read Peter Watts' 'Blindsight', or Alfred Bester's 'Demolished Man'. Keep it up!

Also from May/June Analog issue: "Camino Mundo", an elegant little 1-scene story by Brian Hugenbruch. On a ring world, an old man returns from a long journey & speaks with a young man. (Nice voice & clever statement of theme: stories + name of the road + years of the journey.) @the-lettersea.com

Agreed! Any 5-year-old would know that a corporation is not a person, and money is not speech. Don't get me wrong, I'm not implying that supreme court justices are smarter than 5-year-olds.

Just read a great little story in the May/June issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact. "Amel and the BRIDE", by Julie Duffie, is a 21st century, higher-stakes, bookend to Heinlein's "Delilah and the Space Rigger" - and, in my opinion, a better story. @storyaday.bsky.social

Est. 250,000 people took part in the demonstration in Grant Park. Thousands more demonstrated across Chicago. Rather than disparaging the small numbers of protestors, the White House says they are not paying attention to the protests. (Reminds me of kids covering their eyes during the scary parts.)

Apparently -- I'm not the only one who thinks invading Greenland is batshit crazy.
Graphic showing that 97% of Dems, 90% of Independents and 70% or Republicans would Disapprove of the U.S. Using Military Force to take Greenland.

Minneapolis cops this could hinge on you. Be heroes to your citizens & the nation. 1:Demand ID and face recog from ICE agents "So I can call it in &verify you aren't random thugs/kidnappers." 2:Demand a RECEIPT for every person they grab. 3:demand they erase the P&O on their lying POLICE jackets.

/6 ICE is a monument to totalitarianism, lawlessness, and bigotry. It should be ripped out and woodchippered root and branch and replaced with something focused on the concept that you can’t defend the rule of law by burning it down.

it's very clear that this is a template for how they're going to approach other cities they do not and will not have enough people to do it everywhere all at once but if you live in a city there's a very good chance that an occupying army will show up at your door in the next few years

Recently read (2nd time through) Larry Brooks "Story Engineering". The most thorough writing system I've seen. It is focused on novels but I've analyzed a couple of SF Hall of Fame short stories, using the structure (plot pts, pinch pts, etc.) to see how it works. So far --looks very promising.

My wife & I read the classics to each other after dinner -- having read Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat - to Say Nothing of the Dog", we're taking a break to read Connie Willis's "To Say Nothing of the Dog." Fabulous, hilarious book -- highly recommended (#hopepunk before it's time :) )

It is widely rumored that DJT doesn't read (...not "can't" just doesn't.) At the top of his TL;DR list would probably be: The Constitution and The Federalist Papers. He probably would not recognize any quotes from works that were foundational to democracy.
