Late for #WIPWednesday but whatever. (It wasn't late on tumblr!) Chapter 10 of RTGT is (finally) coming along, so here's a bit more about Vincent's fucked up physiology and some details on the graffiti in the basement of the Manor. #strifentine

“I was thinking about—you wrote this, right?”
“I did.” Vincent padded over, looking the messy lines up and down. “Quite early on, I believe.”
Cloud looked at him sideways. “What’s it mean?”
Vincent pointed. “My age, my birthday, my blood type.” He indicated a smear of white below the third scribbled line. “My father’s birthday was here, I think, and below that was the year I started the assignment.”
He offered the information so readily, Cloud felt a bit stunned. Vincent was forthcoming enough, especially with Cloud, but having seen how the writing came to be made his ease of explanation feel almost inappropriate.
“Your blood type’s A?” He asked, both because he really didn’t know and because he needed a minute to collect himself.
“It was,” Vincent corrected. “I don’t have one anymore.”
Cloud turned, his already unsteady train of thought completely derailed. “You what?”
Vincent just shrugged, putting his hands on his hips, although he didn’t look away from the wall. “My blood no longer contains any antigens at all, so I lack a blood type. Given that I have no need for an immune system, will never require a transfusion to save my life, and the composition of my blood makes me unfit to donate for use in others, it makes no difference.”
All right, that was fucking weird, but Cloud put it aside for the time being. Vincent’s body was weird, after all, he knew that. For Odin’s sake, he was missing more than half his bone marrow. Having no blood type was probably less weird than half his bone marrow being replaced with some kind of ultra-porous crystal that was barely heavier than air.
“Why were you writing your birthday and blood type on the wall?”
Vincent frowned, reaching out and delicately brushing the long line of the poorly-written number 7, tracing the arc perfectly. “To remind myself what they were.”

What software are you using? I fill in base colors on one layer and use special brushes with spaced out "bristles" to create texture in shadows and highlights on their own separate layers. This gives depth without having to draw each individual hair, you just have to follow the contour.

Missed #WIPWednesday, and the bits of the upcoming RTGT chapter I'd want to share are way too long anyway, but here's a snippet from my unposted in-progress DeepGround Vincent Valentine AU. In which Cloud does not yet know Vincent's name, and Vincent has yet to become verbal again. #strifentine

“Of course,” Cloud replied, hurrying to open one of the few doors in the apartment to reveal the bathroom, although he stopped in the doorway. “I mean it, you can stay as long as you need, I just—you must have had some friends or family out there before this, right? They might still be around somewhere.”
Vee shook his head without missing a beat.
“I don’t know how you wound up where you did—”
Raising one hand to interject, Vee shook his head again. ‘There is no one,’ he asserted, signing almost sharp, fast enough that Cloud struggled at first to keep up. ‘Family died before it happened. No partner or friends, some coworkers. No one to look for me or want me back.’
Coworkers. So Vee had been an adult when Shinra did this to him, despite how long ago the project started and how young he looked today. Cloud filed that away to ask about later, if the opportunity presented itself, and instead focused on the content of Vee’s statement instead of the implications it presented.
If Cloud were in Vee’s position, he supposed it wouldn’t be too different, at least not since Zack left the company and moved back home. Kunsel or Cissnei might look for him eventually, but they were both so busy with work it would probably take months to even notice he was missing. Chadley might be concerned, assuming he wasn’t completely aware of what happened, but Hojo’s proudly defective android assistant would no doubt be similarly delayed in any possible response. If Claudia passed away, there would be no one left with any reason to go looking for Cloud until it was far too late to matter; after everything that happened following Sephiroth’s disappearance in Nibelheim, Cloud just wasn’t close enough to anyone to believe they would look for him if he disappeared.

“I guess I get that,” he conceded, raking a hand into his hair with a sigh. “If I disappeared, the only person who’d look right away would be my mom. If she wasn’t around…” He let the sentence hang.
Vee lowered his eyes and nodded. ‘My problem,’ he signed, ‘not yours. I’m sorry.’
“What are you sorry for?”
‘Wasted effort,’ he replied, slowing down again. ‘Even H-O-J-O won’t notice I’m gone for some time. You risk your safety to rescue something nobody ever misses.’

“No one’s looking at you and seeing a dead person, okay? Even after finding you in a coffin, none of us thought you were dead.”

Vincent sighed and looked up from his needlework at last, raising his barely-mismatched eyes to regard Cloud over the contrasting panels of the shirt in progress. “What did everyone think, then?”

“We thought you were weird,” Cloud replied without missing a beat, matter-of-fact. “But we already had Red and Cait Sith on the team, so you were pretty far down on the roster of weird at the time.” Cloud had personally also immediately noticed that the stranger in the coffin was extremely attractive, but there was no reason to share that little tidbit, particularly when he’d kept it to himself for this long. Based on the recent clarification Cloud had received regarding Vincent’s opinion of himself, he wouldn’t believe it anyway.

“At the time,” Vincent echoed. With a low, noncommittal noise, he straightened up a bit in his seat and tilted his head to one side in that way that always reminded Cloud of a curious animal. “What about now?”

“Now I KNOW you’re weird.”

Vincent nodded, hesitating for a moment before turning and passing the shirt to Cloud to hold, murmuring a quick, “If you don’t mind.” Cloud barely had a second to look over the impressively precise stitches before Vincent reached down, took hold of the lower hem of the stitched-up turtleneck he currently wore, and pulled it off.

The casual, albeit not expressly comfortable way in which Vincent stripped to the waist wasn’t new, especially not since he started sleeping at night. He hadn’t exactly been body-shy with Cloud since that incident toward the end of the Crisis wherein Cloud stumbled over him bathing alone in a river, but the past two weeks had done little if not normalize the act of changing clothes in front of one another.

The weather made it impossible to properly clean another mattress for Vincent to use, and Cloud refused to let him sleep on something caked in dust and Odin only knew what else, not that there was any space in his office to fit such a thing anyway. As a result, Vincent continued to spend his nights atop the covers on Cloud’s bed—more than a little nerve-wracking, but undeniably better than allowing him to continue striving toward his apparent goal of an extreme mental breakdown due to sleep deprivation. Cleaning the bedding would be almost as impossible as cleaning a mattress until the rainy season eased up, so Vincent was careful to avoid sleeping in the same clothing he’d worn through the day, keeping the filth and grime of the manor off Cloud’s bed; that set of ill-fitted clothing borrowed after his impromptu flight out the attic window became pajamas, worn every night and already hung up to air out by the time Cloud awoke every morning.

Having him strip his shirt off in the sitting room without warning, however, was still enough of a surprise to bring a rush of heat to Cloud’s face.

You moved in and decided you wanted to hand-plane the staircase, buy new drapery, clean the carpets, and fill the pantry with special-order pasta made fresh by the wife of one of your childhood tormentors.”
Cloud exhaled a laugh. “Okay, okay. We’re both weird.”
“Acceptable.”

I'm annotating my copy of Age of Scorpius by Milo Winter. It's going well so far. (I will be posting about it on my tumblr sideblog under its own tag: www.tumblr.com/ageofscorpin...)

The first two-page spread of Milo Winter's YA novel, Age of Scorpius. It's been annotated to point out poor word choice, repeating phrases, and confusing elements.

The second spread from Age of Scorpius, much more heavily annotated than the previous. Includes a comment at the bottom of the left page reading "Stop saying 'Assidian'!" with all instances of the word underlined throughout the spread, with at least one instance of the word appearing in all but two non-dialogue paragraphs on the spread.

The third spread from Age of Scorpius, less heavily annotated than the previous but with specific notes of repeated phrases and continuity errors between paragraphs on the same page.

The final spread of the first chapter of Age of Scorpius, heavily annotated. The third paragraph is highlighted with a note to "STOP TRYING TO HIT HER AND HIT HER! THIS IS STUPID!" in response to yet another hint about danger that has yet to appear but has been alluded to repeatedly over the previous pages without detail.
