Faint little call, all night ... 'feed me feed me feed me'. When we first moved into the new house, my scared little boy, in his bed, said, "Daddy, there's a noise." Can't remember if we looked for the chick, in the morning.

Imagine being such a racist piece of shit that you find the skull of a murdered little girl, & thought it was hilarious to use it as an ashtray when you thought it belonged to an indigenous Australian, & only felt bad when you found out the she was a white kid. #auspol

But 2028 seems crazy-early to abandon the commercial launch field. I predict it won't, then. BTW, Musk's current big rocket cannot reach Mars with sufficient propellant remaining to land, let alone return. It's not even close to that, and the thing still doesn't properly work, after years.

BTW, SpaceX's closest commercial launch competitors are clearly going to be Chinese. I suspect it knows that, and knows what it means. Ask the global car industry.

1/ Donald Trump's interview with Newsmax yesterday shows very clearly that he subscribes to many false Russian-originated claims and conspiracy theories about the war in Ukraine and has a strong personal dislike of President Zelenskyy. Here's a full transcript:

"Its next closest competitor is US company Rocket Lab, which launched 18 of its smaller Electron rockets to orbit in 2025, but has yet to launch its new, larger Neutron rocket." (I suppose it's now a US company, listed and headquatered in the US...)

"SpaceX, however, is reportedly no longer taking bookings on Falcon 9 beyond 2028. That is because it is transitioning to its much larger rocket, Starship, which reached orbit for the first time on 28 September." First have heard of this.

It's not a federal responsibility. Distant federal governments are poorly equipped to deliver anything such, except via the largesse of 'local' MPs, with all their inherent biases and corruptions.

So what. It blantantly did, in a highly organised way. Where is the NACC? Grounds for one of these never-happen 'exceptional' public enquiries?

Thanks. Is there are unpaywalled copy of the paper anywhere, preprint maybe, or can I email for a copy? Wondering first did she separate floating vs grounded? Those should have different column crushing/collapse mechanics, if only measuring the height can see. And different collapse debris removal.

Told ya this is going to be shoot-em-all — the crocs, a few rowers, maybe some floating bits of flood debris.

Still early? Is, but by the end of September, SOI has been consistently below the old BOM El Niño trigger (-7) for 5 months; rNiño3.4 for 4 months. (That in itself is weird; it's normally the other way around.)

I'm playing it up. Winter-Spring has been pretty dry in some places. Was out west of Ipswich this week. Ground there is seriously parched, but farm dams still have plenty of water. So far it's short-term: www.bom.gov.au/climate/maps...

Didn't know this was especially controversial. Unsupported vertical ice obviously has a structural limit, determined by the distribution of internal fractures, especially ~vertical ones. Vertically fractured ice becomes a column crushing problem. Details are what's not known, and consequences?

One of the components of 'net overseas migration' is returning Australian expats. Another is New Zealand economic migrants. Not much Aus governments can do about either, short of a radical Trumpian attack.

Strongest El Niño on record, by a lot; SOI -20. Weather map shows a broad onshore feed off the unusually cool (dry) tropical Pacific, producing little rain over the Australian continent ... except, err, wait a sec.

Why the behaviour of a very different Australia 75 years ago would be relevant to now isn't clear. Low cost housing construction then was in full-on boom, unconstrained by the absolute the population pressures of today. But we still needed migrant hostels!

Glen @gergyl.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Measured as numbers rather than rate per population, postwar immigration was way way way lower than now. bsky.app/profile/gerg...

Actually, though widely assumed, it's false.
000
Glen @gergyl.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Actually that's incorrect, even measured as a percentage of the concurrent population. Two brief spikes were higher than now, but the long averages were not higher. Unclear to me why they would make such a false claim: bsky.app/profile/gerg...

Can at least hope. Tax exempt organisations are not permitted to participate in political campaigns. This one should already have been struck off. Why hasn't it been? For what corrupt reason?

Glen @gergyl.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
That'd be nice. Way way way too much 'ministerial discretion' in federal law.
