‘In January of this year, former ministers Peter Kyle and Jess Phillips starred in a video promoting the phone. Six months later, sales have been suspended.’ Good deep dive by @georginaq.bsky.social which shows why Ministers sometimes need to do a bit more due diligence www.ft.com/content/670b...

Great piece by @georginaq.bsky.social on the recent uproar provoked by perceived lenient sentences given to three child rapists. As she concludes, if we are going to give up on rehabilitation of child offenders then we need to be clear about the consequences. www.ft.com/content/8a8c...

There is an absolutely terrific article in the FT today: 'How sentencing of 3 child rapists ignited public anger' by @georginaq.bsky.social I am generally of the opinion that the justice system should be more about protection than punishment and this article explores that tension. Well worth a read

Good morning. Why did three teenagers, aged 13 and 14 at the date of their crimes, receive non-custodial sentences (that is, not youth prison) after being convicted for the crimes of raping two girls, aged 14 and 15?

Excellent FT newsletter today from @georginaq.bsky.social subbing for @stephenkb.bsky.social about neets. I've always thought running down FE was a major error of the turn of the millennium. Rebuilding it for the C21 would be a great thing for Burnham to get stuck into.

Why do people *not* respond to the Labour Force Survey? For a while the biggest problem was thought to be failure to make contact with the sampled households. New data suggests by far the bigger problem - arguably more worrying - is people knowing they've been invited but refusing to take part.

Enjoyed this from @georginaq.bsky.social on what plans for new towns might learn from Milton Keynes www.ft.com/content/e640...
What Milton Keynes got right was having a masterplan that sought to integrate homes, community spaces, parks, roads and schools from the start (though there were teething pains in the delivery of these facilities, as in other new towns). The MKDC's board minutes in June 1967 called for "a broad concept — social and physical" to underpin land-use planning. The much-derided grid system helps separate main traffic flow from the pedestrian and cycle networks running through the city.

This was really interesting- my main reservation with Milton Keynes is that some parts of it are just impossible to walk between (despite pedestrian and cycle ways) so think a modern version would need a good tram system. Brilliantly written and lots of information though www.ft.com/content/e640...

In defence of Milton Keynes
It is not perfect, but city’s infrastructure-led development and long-term planning may hold key to Labour’s new towns agenda
