The ultimate "k selected" species they have to survive to 150 just to reproduce. Any exploitation is likely to be unsustainable. Have we learned nothing from hunting whales, elephants and rhinos. Species late to mature and slow to reproduce cannot survive hunting/culling

🧪 The industrial wastewater can contain substances including PFAS and pharmaceuticals. These chemicals enter our waterways and contaminate sewage sludge, which is spread on our land and used to grow our food. 🤢 Yet there is no independent regulator overseeing individual trade-effluent consents. 😕

It just gets worse and worse. The Water Cowboys are pouring vast amounts of industrial effluent into sewage works. They get paid, and all the pollutants go straight through the system and out into waterways. Meanwhile, the illegal sewage overflows continue. It's a criminal scam!

Great experiment! Garden spiders will eat back aphids if they have to, and there's not much else around. The reaction you observed indicates that the aphids were distasteful. They can absorb chemicals from the plants they feed on and Dahlias do have some unpleasant compounds in their tissues.

This twisted and magnificent holly tree is what you get if you give them many decades to grow in an ancient woodland. Slow growing but worth the wait.
Holly tree, with a two-foot wide trunk and gnarled elephant-hide bark. Halfway up the frame, the trunk splits into three secondary trunks. in the background are lush green leaves. Offa's Dyke Path above the Wye Valley near Tidenham.

Replacing trees with concrete isn't economic advance; it’s ecological bankruptcy. Deforestation is not development—it is self-sabotage on a planetary scale. We cannot build a sustainable future on wiped-out ecosystems. 🌲❌

Plant-rich diets are the food system's electrification. Petrol cars only see 18-25% of their fuel energy get to the wheels; EVs 87-91%. Heat pumps are 2 or 3 times more efficient. Food has its own combustion engine: a chicken turns about 13% of its feed calories into food, worse than a petrol car.
