Hegseth: "250 years ago, we rejected an earthly king, an ocean away, appealing instead to a heavenly king above." In fact, George III was sworn to uphold the Church of England and opposed giving Catholics the vote. The U.S. Constitution explicitly forbade such policies.

George III was considered a humble and dutiful monarch who encouraged advances in public health including immunization, science industry and agriculture. Hi own struggle with bipolar mania led to world leading reforms in mental health treatment. He was essentially the exact opposite of Trump.

With all the ignorance of history I see on Bluesky, I'm starting to wonder if US schools teach that 18th century British monarchs held absolute power and that the onset of George III's mental illness was before the Revolution, both of which are totally false.

22 September 1761. George III (aged 23) and the German Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (aged 17), were crowned King and Queen of Great Britain in Westminster Abbey, London. The extended procession and service meant the couple was not officially crowned until 3:30PM.

A lot of people on Bluesky apparently think the US Founders were clairvoyant, breaking away from Britain in 1776 because he would suffer a mental breakdown in the late 1780s.

Pluralism is great in cities and can turn toxic in digital spaces like Bluesky. This isn't a problem with pluralism, but with the structure of digital spaces. Fortunately, there's a pretty simple solution to keep the benefits of vast online communities while quieting their most toxic residents.
