Dario Amodei of Anthropic is Very Normal and Can Be Trusted With the Future of Humanity: “…in my case I'd say that I think an adult death is perhaps 2 or 3 times worse than an infant's death.” blog.givewell.org/2010/06/03/m...

GiveWell makes explicit cost effectiveness estimates (based in part on those of the Disease Control Priorities report) for both organizations: ~$545 per infant death averted for Village Reach, and ~$150-750 per death averted for Stop TB. These are roughly comparable, but don't take into account the fact that Stop TB mainly treats adults, while VR mainly treats infants and children. I feel that adults are capable of deeper and more meaningful experiences than are infants, and also deeper connections with other people, so an adult death seems worse to me than an infant death (though both are of course bad). Trying to quantify exactly how much worse is very subjective and can also seem calculating ("how many babies would you kill to save an adult?i, but on a practical level one is forced to make difficult decisions with limited funds, and in my case I'd say that I think an adult death is perhaps 2 or 3 times worse than an infant's death. Thus, adjusted for my personal values, Id say that Stop TB is ~2-3 times more cost-effective than VR, though I understand that others may validly disagree with this subjective assessment.

The Tom Hiddleston #Pompeii docuseries on Disney+ is first-rate. Great vehicle for introducing the kids (10+ yo) to interdisciplinary history. /1

#U2 dropped another new EP yesterday. It's beautiful, deep, and sometimes, somehow lighthearted!

It ran long, but I genuinely appreciate the final season of "Stranger Things." In our culture, we have too few remaining stories that celebrate adolescence in all its insecurities and dangers, even while grieving childhood's end.

Now would be a good time for anyone who wants to learn about recent Iranian history to read this. It is well worth your time and money (I am sure your local library has it if you don’t want to purchase it).

Quest Diagnostics is running a Black Friday sale on lab tests. On the one hand, this doesn't seem like a sign of a healthy healthcare system. On the other hand, 25% off is a solid discount!

#BlueBooks for the second semster in a row. No regrets. The students' work is solid and I know it's theirs. We humans need accountability and transparency in order to flourish together.

Even if you're not into EDM, "I'm Tim," the #Avicii documentary on Netflix, is worth your time. Such a vivid depiction of #anxiety and #addiction in the midst of joy and the pursuit of beauty.

Another tough reality: in urban firestorm of this magnitude, municipal water systems simply aren't designed to keep up. It *is* possible to build redundant emergency firefighting water system (SF has one, a legacy of 1906 quake & fire), but few places do. sfpuc.gov/about-us/our...

The Los Angeles wildfires are at risk of contaminating the city's water supply, with ash, pathogens, toxic chemicals, flame retardants, and even melted pipes able to enter reservoirs and aqueducts. Several communities have advised residents not to drink tap water.

What can I do, small as I am? One of the things that I love about #TheWildRobot is the scope of Roz's task. I cannot save the world. But I can nurture this one life in my hands, build community in a blizzard, and parent while the world burns, no matter what my programming says.

Loved #TheWildRobot novel and film from @peterbrownstudio.com! In the spirit of #EllenRipley and #SarahConnor, Roz is an impromptu universal mother for the apocalypse. Okay, with fewer guns (rated PG). But with a backdrop of just as much corporate greed threatening to destroy us all.
