This will never stop blowing my mind. A 12-year sequence of real telescope images of a star 133 lightyears away. And around it, four planets slowly orbiting. Four real exoplanets, each more massive than Jupiter, imaged as they move around their host star.

Just a volcano seismologist pointing out that "seismology" is a broad term and doesn't just focus on large global quakes. There are a host of scientific questions in seismology that definitely need more data.

Desperately trying to balance two things: (1) my anger at people who hate gay and trans people but allege to love Dolly Parton, and (2) my desire to be more like Dolly and not be judgy and hateful towards the people in category (1). Failing so far.

Some relevant facts: 1. The White House FY 2027 budget proposal included a 43% cut to the NSF GRFP budget, so they have made it clear that prioritizing the development of America's next generation of scientific talent is not their priority. nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/FY-202...

Dreadful scenes from the devastating Rasuwa flood in Nepal/Tibet. My heart goes out to everyone affected. It likely began with a glacier collapse / rock–ice avalanche recorded by seismometers worldwide. I hope real-time seismic monitoring can support early warning for communities downstream.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

Been in DC the last few days, and the reflecting pool really is a sight to behold.
Zones of bright green algae in the Washington DC reflecting pool. A television cameraman points his camera to the ground where a host from the reflecting pool is dumping bright green water into a drain.A National Park worker in Waters, using a pool sweeper to push bright green algae to the center of the pool. The Washington monument and reflecting pool. The interior of the pool is green, surrounded by NPS workers who are sweeping and vacuuming up the algae..

Actually, now I see that you're talking about miners, so presumably hearing noises underground. Again, I don't know enough about that slide, so perhaps this is a similar situation. I'll see what I can dig up on that event. But no, this is not a commonly observed phenomenon.

Jackie Caplan-Auerbach @geophysichick.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
In most landslides we have *not* seen precursory earthquakes. But we also don't have a lot of examples where there are nearby seismometers, so it could be that we're just not close enough to record them.
010
Jackie Caplan-Auerbach @geophysichick.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
I can't speak to what is different without knowing more about the event you're describing. However, "audible" implies surficial events such as rockfalls, and the sequences I'm talking about are likely precursory slip at the landslide base. You wouldn't be able to hear those.

If I only read papers about volcanoes (which is what most of my research is on), I might miss opportunities to learn from other fields--things that make my science better.
