I have finished it. I liked it even if Matthew McConaughey’s character irritated me and that the actual Bre-X story was wilder. Worth a watch.

Ben Stiller in Zoolander: Mining Scene
Alt: Ben Stiller in Zoolander. He is wearing a blue hat with a light, a strappy white tank top, and pants with lots of tools hanging stylishly around the waist. His arms ar smeared with black dust and he carries a rock hammer. He is swaggering as if on a model runway.

SCOOP: Last week the National Design Studio announced a new AI website, America.gov. Turns out some NDS workers are on loan to the government and are actually employed by a newly formed nonprofit, founded by the general counsel of SpaceXAI who is himself a DOGE alum. www.wired.com/story/myster...

A Mysterious Nonprofit Run by SpaceXAI’s Top Lawyer Is Paying the Salaries of Government Workers
The National Design Studio has been something of a successor agency to DOGE. A WIRED investigation finds some of its members are on loan from a nonprofit run by SpaceXAI’s general counsel.

Only have like 15 more minutes but I have liked it so far, but then I have always been fascinated by Bre-X so I was biased going in 😄

Ugh I’m not gonna get to finish this movie today, but I got to the big reveal that it was all a hoax and I gotta tell you, I don’t feel bad for the main character because he was a dirtbag

I take that back. The most authentic part was when the geologist kept the drills turning while Matthew McConaughey writhed around with malaria.

It’s something else 🤣

The more authentic part of this movie so far is the fact that the geologist randomly waxes poetic about gold 😂

I should say it’s not exactly the real story, it’s a Hollywood version but so far entertaining but I know how this ends 😬

I still can’t believe they are talking about ore production in 2 years on a project that still doesn’t have calculated reserves in a place lacking infrastructure and in one of the toughest climates for mining on the planet🫠

Wow. Greenland has approved the mine plan for the Tanbreez project. They do not yet have all the permits to start mining, but it’s wild that they have this approval without any mineral reserves (only resources) and plan first ore production for 4th quarter 2028. www.mining.com/greenland-go...

Paleontology people - We found numerous tube(?) shaped calcite objects in sandier layers within the overall mudrock sequence at Culpeper on Friday. These terrestrial strata are Triassic in age. Does anyone recognize this as a fossil? If so, what taxon do you think they are? ⚒️
Callan's fingertips provide a sense of scale next to some white things in brown rock. One is shaped like a rod, another shows a U shape in cross section. An elongated ⊂ shape of white calcite in a brown clastic rock. Scale pen for scale.

I looked it up and apparently not only does the water you put in there come out with high levels of radon, but also arsenic, lead, vanadium, and uranium because the liner was made with carnotite containing clays and the spout is made of lead

All right fellow rock-lickers, I call upon your knowledge! ⚒️🍎 Today a student asked WHY the streak color of a mineral is often different from the color in hand sample and I (the worst mineralogist in any geo department I'm in) was left mumbling about scattering. Does anyone have a better answer?

⚒️ Sigh. Apparently we're relitigating the ICS vote to reject establishing the Anthropocene as a formal geological epoch. I'm not sure what is actually going to be achieved here except to keep everyone mad at each other and muddy public understanding. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Congratulations, Quartz! After a decade of #MinCup, this key rock-forming mineral of optical tricks is the #MinCup26 Champion! Due to intense manipulation attempts in the final hours, the exact winning margin is still being audited. Please join us tomorrow for celebration!

Lol. Yeah, you need to check your supplies at least every few years. And not just food! Other materials break down. I think the one that surprised me most over the years was my 3M n95 masks: eventually the elastic straps become fragile & can snap. 😷 Nitrile gloves, light sticks & bandaids degrade.

Quartz is present in most hydrothermal ore deposits and is essential for understanding them through the samples of the original fluid preserved as tiny inclusions. These inclusions provide information on composition, density, temperature & pressure. Featured - an aqueous-carbonic fluid = gold!

Google Earth's historical satellite view is an amazing research tool. Here's the much-contested and dangerous Rubaya Mine in eastern Congo in 2010 and 2025:
Satellite view of Rubaya in 2010: a patchwork of small green and brown farm fields on rolling hills, with a winding road, a small village, and only a tiny patch of exposed soil at lower right.Satellite view of Rubaya, DR Congo, in 2025: a large bare, orange-and-tan scar of open-pit mining cuts through green hills, with eroded gullies radiating outward and a village at upper left.
