I would love to know comes to mind when you imagine an appropriate shrine/ritual/genuflection/devotional retweet. If I were any kind of artist, I would have had a stab at manifesting something myself

Lots not captured by a connectome as I understand it… over 11,000 types of neurons, so much necessary complexity that won’t be captured in a sim that runs a map. But even so.. it’s on the path..

One I missed earlier this month. Google mapped a fruit fly brain. You can now run a fruit fly brain in a simulator. I feel the queasiness that this post (interconnected.org/home/2026/09...) does. Esp given their intent to do the same for the human brain (sites.research.google/gr/neural-ma...)
In case you missed it:
Google Research and partners mapped the complete brain of fruit fly. (3 September).
It's a common bug and common in scientific research. The male fruit fly has 166,000 neurons across the brain and main nerve cord; the map is called the connectome.
Long story short, the connectome is now available for free download, you can get a simulator of the different types of neurons, it caught the imagination of the internet, over September there has been all kinds of wild nonsense (impressive

That is amazing. I need to restart my LRB subscription for pieces like this I’ve only seen cave paintings once but they blew me away with… not being paintings in a way I understood? Powerful intrusions on reality. Ironically I don’t have the words… interconnected.org/home/2022/07...

chapter 1 of Greg Egan’s DIASPORA is the realest depiction of the birth of a continuous learning AGI that we’ll have until we actually have AGI and it can tell us he shared it for free on his website. Read it (then buy the book) Orphanogenesis www.gregegan.net/DIASPORA/01/...

Mmm yeah. I think that’s why I feel like I’m missing something: maybe what I’m assuming is as dumb as PFI turned out to be, but I don’t have the background knowledge to recognise it

But don’t they borrow ahead secured on the future asset? That’s what private equity would do My struggle is why council house building is being attacked at all on budget grounds. Ideology, sure, I can see why there’s debate
110
Matt Webb 🌸🌼🌸 @genmon.fyi · 24/07/2026
the "cost" comes if the new houses are rented out at below depreciation... but that's a downstream decision from the building programme, and of course should be discussed as govt spend. or does it not make sense to think of govt budgets as capex/opex like this? the building itself: just do it!!
100
Matt Webb 🌸🌼🌸 @genmon.fyi · 24/07/2026
I need a macroeconomist to explain this to me: I don't get why the govt council house building programme is a "cost" that needs to be budgeted for cash is converted into an asset: housing. it's moving numbers around on the balance sheet. the govt still has the asset, can still borrow against it

Totally recognise the problems and we need to fix those directly — but i see a single ID as a tempting hazard in this era of increasingly easy data aggregation and correlation So when i say “only connect on my private phone” i care more about “private” than “phone”

lots of cards! Council tax, road tax, NHS… but if you don’t have a phone and a password manager then that could be a backup. Dunno, single ID (electronic or physical) gets me super nervous
110
Matt Webb 🌸🌼🌸 @genmon.fyi · 22/07/2026
then I think we can find ways to solve for that* specifically — we need firebreaks between databases for the reasons I mention (to avoid tech-enabled slippery slope authoritarianism, and a single way to fall between the cracks) * Google oauth, ship out yubikeys, write down passwords/plastic cards

Matt Webb 🌸🌼🌸 @genmon.fyi · 21/07/2026
Pleased that UK govt has scrapped the single digital ID scheme. IMO: illiberal and a single point of failure Instead: create a wallet of the various IDs we use — council tax per household, road tax per car, NHS per patient The only place they should connect is my private phone

So there are “seeds” which iterate a bunch of times to produce variety Poem is still on 4o — newer models have poor imagination But I feel like models get dumber when compute is required elsewhere OpenAI released new models and my guess is they diverted compute away from 4o, which became “same-y”
