I missed a flight out of Dublin a few months ago because I forgot that I wasn't in NZ and had to leave a lot more than half an hour to clear security and get to my gate. Had to buy a whole new ticket because Aer Lingus had no compassion whatsoever. Thankfully it was only to London!

At least it's a glorious spring morning and you can enjoy the perks of being up at dawn! *pulls curtains, gazes out through rainy window at grey skies and sodden lawn covered in wind-blown leaves* Sorry for your troubles 😐

Chants of 'Don't protect the women, we can fight. We don't need your fascist shite' rang out in Glasgow tonight. As anti-fascists, women's rights groups and trade unionists protested against 'patriot platform' and their supporters pushing their racist agenda in the city. Things you love to see ✊

Haha that would explain a lot! I did have a Covid jab yesterday so maybe I am still feeling that a bit too. And tomorrow will be less thinky, more talky about where the thinking got me today so that should be less tiring. And I have a job so I'm not complaining really, being employed is good!

It's amazing how tiring it is when you're doing solid thinking. I was at it all day and now feel like I've been climbing a mountain or something. Can hardly get off the sofa now! Brains must burn through a lot of energy eh?

🧪 An unexpected science story: an edible pregnancy test for the blind. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is in saliva for several days after conception. They’re developing a lollipop 🍭 with bumps that rise in the presence of hCG. Suck the lollipop, if both sides become bumpy, you’re pregnant.

At lunchtime I went for what turned out to be my 10th COVID vaccination. Feeling okay so far but also like I might be asleep by 8pm. I had short election-related conversations with two different staff at the pharmacy and we were all in agreement that the current govt is bad for people's health.

TVNZ might not have thought about how this looks on the app.
"Mass murderer's firing squad execution to be live-streamed in 90-year first"
With a big WATCH NOW button underneath it.
I hope NZ television doesn't actually live steam this.

Behold the treasure I received today. The last time I was able to find this Brandy Snap Whittakers was in Feb at the FreshChoice in Raglan of all places. Haven't seen it anywhere since, which made me Very Sad. Somebody knew this and thought of me and somehow made this gift happen 🥰
Two blocks of delicious Whittakers Brandy Snap chocolate, somehow not yet devoured by me even though I have had them for several hours now.

I remember getting a surprisingly mouth-burny toastie at the old Fix & Fogg eatery on Eva Street when I was visiting the capital a few years ago. It was made with their Smoke & Fire peanut butter. Good in a sandwich with other ingredients but I definitely wouldn't want it by itself on toast.

How a plant selfie in Colombian jungle led to ‘jaw dropping’ giant waterlily find
Species with leaves large enough to be seen from space is already critically endangered – and plans are afoot to protect it A chance social media encounter has led to the race-against-time discovery of a new species of giant waterlily that has until now been hidden in the depths of Colombia’s jungle. But the plant, which is so huge it is visible from space, is already considered critically endangered. Continue reading...

I don't think I'd quite caught on to the Evil of Amazon when I bought my last Kindle in 2020, but I've got no excuses now. And aside from that, collection management is tedious and I think it is the only device I still have with a micro-USB charging port. Kobo Clara BW + Calibre + Overdrive? Mwah.

Not before time, many of you will quite rightly say. Amazon is extremely problematic.

Biggest reading improvement is being able to check out and read library books right from the Kobo. The Kindle can't open them at all without some technical jiggery pokery, because of course Bezos wants us all using his Amazon bookstore. I've finally tired of the whole thing and made the switch.

I've used an eReader almost daily since getting a Sony Reader in 2007, then a Kindle Keyboard, then a couple of Kindle Paperwhites. Today I cut the Amazon cord and got myself a Kobo. Biggest improvement over Paperwhite so far is not having a stupid Sleep button right where my little finger goes 😄
A Kobo Clara BW eReader with a book open—The Neverending Story, by Michael Ende, if you're curious. My little finger is acting as a stand at the bottom.

I might be waiting a while for this one 😬 But no doubt it will be worth the wait because Catherine Chidgey writes great books, and by the time I get it I'll have forgotten I was waiting for it and it'll be a delightful surprise 🎁
Library hold queue for Catherine Chidgey's new book, "The Starving Bride". I am person number 119 in line for the three copies that the library ordered!

NZ looks like it's going to legalise plug-in solar too. Hasn't happened yet and we go to elections in a few weeks but every party has indicated that they support this so 🤞 I'm a homeowner so should get rooftop solar but my roof needs replacing first and there are no govt subsidies.

I was in Kerry in May for the first time since the 1980s and wished I'd had more than a few days to appreciate the area. Although I would defo struggle with the accent as life in Wexford and Antrim and now NZ has not prepared me for something so different 😄

My manager in 2011 lived on Rocking Horse Road and seemed very traumatised by the earthquakes and the ongoing damage done by aftershocks and the EQC process. I can't imagine wanting to invest in a new building there now.

I only discovered a few days ago that The Neverending Story was a book before it was a film. Reading it now (thanks, @christchurchlib.bsky.social ) and enjoying it immensely. I'm told the book has a lot more to it so I'm looking forward to that. Also I was not expecting Atreyu to be green-skinned.
