"How do you transform me into a girl?"
She laughs. Her smile is generous and caring. Her head is on the pillow next to him. The moon casts soft gray light on both of their naked bodies through the window across from them. "First, I want to hear you say it."
Instantly, he does. "I want you to transform me
into a girl."
"Not that, sweet Girl. Do not involve me. Say it." Say what? This is what I want, so what's wrong with what I'm asking for? The magical transformation. Getting to be someone Else, someone New, someone Real? Not Nothing. Not Simon. A girl. A woman. She has the key and I'm the lock and I don't know how I get Her to turn it and open me.
"What do you want, Girl?"
He tries to breathe in to reply, but it hitches in his throat, making him cough, roughly. The cough becomes a wail and soon he's convulsing, sobbing, and dribbling spit.
And, despite how disgusting he is, She holds him, She's there for him, and as She runs her palm tenderly along his back, his fit begins to fade.
Has anyone ever held him this gingerly before?
Lisa's embrace earlier was motherly, but in Her arms, he's porcelain, and She'd never let him chip.

Say it.
It's right there.

She's right here.
She wants to give you this.

"Oh." Her lips turn up in a half smile, and She beams, "Well, certainly you already know how we are going to do that to you."

achievement and takes it place among the pinnacle of the growing body of trans literature. Another impactful book I read this year is "Bad Habit" by Alana S. Portero, and I will be keeping "Aftertaste" in a place of honor next to it as a treasured literary memory. Remember, friends, you have to live. "Aftertaste" will help. It's a beautiful read that reminds us that we are beautiful too.

Emoria has crafted a story in her debut novel unlike any other I have read. The author invites us to where it's dark, scary, and vulgar, only to find life-affirming truth and beauty that speaks to a trans experience anyone should empathize with. It is unabashedly queer and harnesses the anxieties and even the joys of the trans experience to tell a dizzying and sometimes seductive horror story. While it is a story that is most definitely directed to a trans audience it also cuts to the heart of the human need of realizing one's true self, potential, and community.
The book also makes full use of the word as a visual medium with all manners of inventive typography and formatting, further driving home moments that hit like a truck.
The author's inclusion of a content warning list by chapter (of which there are many potentially triggering things) and a link to a "Cis Guide To Aftertaste" are also nice pieces of companion material for those that need it.
It is a book that dares to be read. It is a book that feels dangerous and full of psychic damage, but somehow still fun and retains a gentleness that keeps you safe. To those with an open mind and heart (who also aren't squeamish), to those who ever felt lost in life or figuring themselves out, I can't recommend this book enough.
I also want to clarify that I read this book as a cisgender hetero male. I understand this book has been quite effective for those who are themselves trans or just discovering that part of them, which I believe is amazing and makes this book even necessary. While can't say my experience even compares to those whose foundations were shaken, I'd like to highlight that you don't need to be queer to listen/support/enjoy or allow yourself to be affected by queer media as I found myself welling up with tears multiple times throughout the story. At a time when the media landscape is being threatened by homogenization, it is now more important to seek out and celebrate works like Aftertaste.

“I took a long, long time to figure this out,” she says, gesturing at herself, “If… look, August, I’m still trying to figure this out, truthfully. And I remember how confusing being you felt. So, I’m not expecting you to say it, or totally understand. I mean, fuck, do you even know the word?”

i read it! it meant so much! many parts of it read like Emoria was sitting in my brain while writing it it is extremely relatable, paced well, and keeps you on your toes yuri as wine is a very cool metaphor and as a wine snob i especially appreciate i can't recommend Aftertaste enough. 11/10

The film is written, directed, and co-stars Hitoshi Ozawa, a legendary Yakuza actor who is a villain in Yakuza 0, who got his fellow legends involved. This was his passion project inspired by one of his best friends, a trans woman, and he worked with the community for representative casting.
