I think there is something depressingly cynical about having to accept the consequences of being a good person. Minorities have always been at the forefront of social rights movements and i believe it's in large part because fighting back is easier than willingly putting yourself in the line of fire

Part of taking responsibility for your past is accepting that some stains won't wash away and not everyone will want to accept someone into their lives with certain kind of histories. You can improve, better yourself, do whatever you can to make up for your mistake. But that's the bare minimum.

On Jacob Geller

I'm aware of the rape allegations against Jacob Geller, as well as the fact that his name is on a court-ordered list of UNC students disciplined for sexual violence. I've hesitated on whether to post anything about it, because the victim hasn’t been identified and I don’t want to participate in a retraumatizing conversation against their wishes. At the same time, as someone who has collaborated with Jacob Geller, I do not want my silence to be taken as endorsement.

For my part, I did not know about this and I wish I had. What justice and repair look like in cases like these are for the victim to decide, and I do not know their wishes or what accountability processes, if any, took place. However, strictly on a personal level, I’m uncomfortable having collaborated with someone who has presented himself as a nonthreatening feminist without ever disclosing his history of sexual violence to me or any other colleagues I’ve spoken to. I have no intention of ever working with Geller again. Beyond that, the person this happened to ought to be the ultimate authority on what happens next, and how they wish to tell their story if at all.
