Hm. Guess I have to put a password on missions, or find a way to set them to friends only or something. Did a level 10 "leveling" quest, and a level 191 dropped in. Said they were there to help. Didn't see a single enemy after that point and they oneshot the boss. Wow, thanks.

I felt like my character I just made in Phantasy Star Universe was familiar somehow. It just hit me that I just fucking made Livia Junius from Final Fantasy XIV.

A purple and black armoured robot girl with silver/light grey skin. He has a horned armoured helmet/face thing that completely covers her eyes and has lipstick on the metal mouth that may or may not actually move.

Created a caseal (robot girl), did the first mission. Seems neat, I need to adjust some controller stuff I think but I definitely see how this was the in-between phase for Phantasy Star Online, as it leans towards PSO2. Nice art style though, got that lovely PS2/early 360 era smell.

Okay I went and installed it. Time to check out Phantasy Star Universe. Because what I needed is more MMOs in my life, clearly. Also, had to boot the game as admin, yet another game that doesn't load if you try to run it as a non-admin user. And now I have PSOBB, PSU, and PSO2 installed.

The game is well over 2 decades old, its janky, it has a learning curve shaped like a brick wall, and a lot of the character of the game comes from it being an unbalanced dumpster fire. Saying that, FFXI is something you only get to enjoy for the first time once. Have fun, take your time.

Monsters & Memories just posted an update, looks like the final reworks will be done in time for the early access launch! That's great as NEC and SHD were the two I was looking forwards to the most. Also it talks about changes to character creation like traits and background selection. Seems good!

We bullied some earth elementals for some levels, did a crawl of Mistmoore Castle but that ended up being too easy so got poor rewards, then got completely lost in the 3D underwater maze that is Kedge Keep. We also grabbed a 'ranged item' (amulet?)... and 7 more of them to make upgrading easier.

You can tell these blockchain people don't play games at all. 5% chance to drop an item and only 4 exist means no one's bothering to try and get it. That barely even counts as a rare drop rate. Also this inter-connectivity already existed long before blockchain. Guild Wars 1 connected to GW2.

－Recently, the game has been going viral on X for its beautiful undressing animations. I’ve even read in one of your previous interviews that the development team practiced stripping themselves as reference for the undressing animations. What was the process behind making the animations actually like?

Matsui:

I’d love to know how far that story has spread. It’s true.

First, we write a plot for each undressing scene, then draw storyboards, exactly as the original team did. Then the real work begins, because the animation is essentially all keyed by hand. A designer moves the clothing’s 3D model, frame by frame, manually. It really is pretty much like the claymation method I mentioned.

We did try automating it with physics simulation first, but it was a total failure. The cloth moved in a physically correct way, but had absolutely no allure. We learned a profound lesson: accuracy and sensuality are two unrelated properties. In the end, we accepted that humans would have to do all of it.

Then VR adds its own weight. In a normal game, if something becomes awkward, you can cut away or swap models between scenes. In VR, the player can look from any angle at any time, so none of those tricks are available. The same model has to undress convincingly no matter where you’re standing. When I described this to a designer at another studio, he said, “I would never do that.” I’ve chosen to take it as a compliment.

And then, yes, the part you’ve read about. The undressing motions themselves use motion capture, but the deeper problem was that nobody actually knew the correct rhythm and order in which a person takes off clothes. So, the directors gathered and undressed themselves as reference. “That zipper is coming down too fast.” “She’d pause once before slipping her shoulder out.” These were serious, sober discussions. For compliance reasons, the Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns team works in a walled-off section of our office – and that was the moment those walls truly earned their keep.

Finally gave Dusklight a try, installed it and the Linkle mod of course. Set up a randomizer and... can't get past the start. Not sure if it's a bug or if it's my lack of knowledge of TP. I have skip prologue on, but the only way out of Ordon is with the cutscene that gets you thrown in jail.

Oh shit, Adrullan Online Adventures just announced the next Community (Pre-)Alpha test. Looks like its November 1st - 8th. Guess I know what we're doing that week. It's a cool voxel EverQuest style MMO. Played one day of the last test and really enjoyed it and wished I played more of the test.

A friend sent me a link to a video of Elder Scrolls Daggerfall, but as an MMO. Neat idea! So I looked it up. It's a port of Daggerfall Unity into the browser (I'll talk about that after), and is open source. Which makes it easy to tell it's all vibe coded. Can't have SHIT around here.

That was fun! DAoC is still a fun romp just in PvE and still holds up pretty well. Bonedancer is a cool idea and once we get higher level we'll have a skeletal commander that can have (I think) up to 5 of it's own minions we can decide between. I'll have to look into the (many) other classes too.

Got 6 more levels on our shadow knight, and only one death so that is some solid progress. We then at the end had the great idea to try to get some exp for the mage. Spent a while (re: half hour) walking through most of Velious, killed two enemies to gain a level, then died and lost the level. Yay.
