Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.

The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive—because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about “Western civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

Excited to be playing in Kingston for the release of the "A Year of Deep Listening" at Creative Music Studio.
A bright, industrial-style rehearsal room labeled “Creative Music Studio.” A maroon banner with gold lettering hangs high on the back wall above a dense arrangement of framed jazz posters, concert bills, and illustrated musician portraits. The space has white brick walls, exposed beams, and large factory-style windows on the right letting in daylight.

In the center, two green mid-century chairs sit on layered rugs facing a single microphone stand, suggesting an intimate performance or talk. To the right are stacked folding chairs, a Yamaha speaker on a blue stand, and a cluster of percussion instruments including congas and drums. To the left are music stands and additional framed artwork. String lights run along the wall, adding a warm, informal atmosphere to the otherwise clean, gallery-like studio.

Why did Indiana University attack and cut its own student newspaper? Well, in a twist of irony any English professor would call clichéd, it turns out IU did it because they were angry about the students' reporting on a FIRE report naming IU as the worst public university for free speech in the US.
Indiana University banned its student newspaper from printing just days before homecoming weekend — after firing the paper’s advisor when he refused to censor critical coverage.

That would be bad enough on its own, but FIRE is taking this one personally, as the Indiana Daily Student reported this hostile campaign was due in part to its coverage of FIRE’s ranking Indiana University as the worst public university for free speech.

You read that right. The school’s response to the news that they are bad at free speech … is to censor the news. It’s ironic — and not just in the Alanis Morissette sense — that these actions will likely push its overall ranking even lower next year. At least we can’t fault them for consistency.

A tabletop display at Northeastern University shows a flyer for my talk titled “Sonification You Can Use.” The flyer includes my photo—short blond hair with a silver streak, glasses, and a black top—and lists the event details: Thursday, October 16, 3:00–4:30 PM, Ryder 354. It notes my role as Professor of Music and IACS at Stony Brook University. Behind it are Northeastern College of Arts, Media and Design brochures, and a cup of red-and-white pencils sits on the wooden table. Sunlight streams through large windows in the background.

When you forgot to charge your tech but remembered to charge your portable batteries.
The image shows the back pocket of a car seat containing several pieces of audio and camera equipment neatly stored together.

From left to right:

A RØDE MicroLED light (black, compact square device) used for on-camera lighting, attached to a small mounting bracket.

Two hexagonal adapters or cold shoe mounts, each with a brass threaded insert on top—likely used for attaching lights, microphones, or other gear.

A gray handheld gimbal or stabilizer (possibly for a smartphone or small camera) on the far right.

Multiple charging and connection cables running through the setup, indicating these devices are ready for charging or in use.

Got to record this silo at Art OMI in upstate New York for my AI powered acoustics startup, Lyrai. The night before sampling had the amazing experience of improvising in the space with the resident musicians.
nside, the view looks up toward the domed roof, where steel beams radiate to a small circular opening that lets in natural light. The tall concrete walls are stained with darker patches, and a rectangular hatch punctuates the otherwise vast, resonant interior.A tall cylindrical silo stands in an open grassy field surrounded by trees. Its vertical concrete panels are weathered with black streaks running down from the domed metal roof, giving the structure an aged but enduring presence.
